A girl can dream, can't she?

Does he need financial support to do this? I'm up for a few bucks.

The author of the article concludes it with this:

“Do I think Trump can win as a third-party candidate? No. Would I vote for him as a third-party candidate? Yes."

I hope he's smart enough to realise that the second comment actually fulfils the requirement for the first.

I really hope he does. The GOP has been going down a rabbit hole with him and it's time to clean out their house.

I'm not wild about the idea of giving Democrats free reign, but crippling the Republican party for a while by splitting it up might be for the best. Pull the Trump influence out of the party and get the Republicans back to being focused on conservative issues. Let Trump and his loyalists stew on the side until they gradually fade away.

imo - If Trump had the influence to split the Republican party it would have happened in the 2022 election. That election proved that the voters are more interested in supporting traditional conservative candidates than in backing Trump supporting election deniers. Almost all Trump-backed candidates lost.

Trump threatening the Republicans with treachery just shows that he isn't concerned about the US. He's perfectly willing to put the Democrats back in charge in order to stick it to his perceived enemies in the Republican party. I see him as a very disturbed man. He's coming to the end of his life and what does he have to show for all those years?

Some interesting polling data on Trump as a Third Party candidate.

A quarter of Republican leaning voters consider themselves more Trump supporters than Republicans.

Of those, 69% would vote for Trump as a third party candidate over DeSantis as GOP nominee. (And 11% of the 'loyal' GOP crowd would also do so).

interesting also that virtually nobody says they wouldn't vote when both options are available. I think the key thing for the actual 2024 matchup is how many Trump voters would not vote if Trump is not on the ballot at all. (Or how many GOP voters would not vote if Trump were the nominee.)

When faced with a general election his candidates failed but they managed to get their spots on the ballot from the GOP primaries so there is still a tendency in the party to support those who toe his line. Assuming that faction remains faithful, as they seem to be per the data in essentalsalts posts, 2024 will be a golden opportunity for the former president to act as a spoiler.

Trump won’t commit to endorsing eventual 2024 GOP nominee

“It would depend. I would give you the same answer I gave in 2016 during the debates,” Trump told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt.

“It would have to depend on who the nominee was,” he added.

Trump’s refusal to say he would support the party’s nominee in 2024 underscores concerns among some Republicans that the former president would run as a third-party candidate if he does not win the nomination, siphoning off a large number of GOP primary voters who are loyal to Trump.

[I still think it's a pretty remote possibility for him to run as an independent candidate. But not-endorsing the GOP candidate is tantamount to telling his followers to stay home on election day.]
