I was a field electrical engineer/electrician, sent from Mobile, Al. to Canton ,Fl. to work in a paper mill town with one red light, a store And I think a Bank. What a town. Loretta worked at Dairy Queen, And was begged to work at this store, she took the offer.
Everyday at lunch I would go to the store and eat. Eye contact with Loretta; and a smile was always passed between us. Over the weeks I was waiting for a job to start up in Mobile, we seemed to develop an attraction For each other.
Well it happen , she ask me if she could join me for lunch, and thats when we first talked to each other. I started up The job in AL. and she moved up and got a assistant manager job for a gas chain.
Near the Holidays we're about to call it a night, I asked her, "what would you Say if I asked you a question?" Can you imagine her excitement! She said "yes" and she had a date set; Ill never forget, PM me for a short version of that. My Dad was ill, I didnt think he would make another Christmas, so plans were Made for us to visit in Pensacola.
I always took the holidays off, thanksgiving till the new year, so I was free. Loretta on the other hand, had to schedule time off. It was like pulling teeth. Months in advance we planed our trip, so we could tell my Dad we were to be Married.
Wednesday morning Loretta got a call telling her she has to work Thursday. She told them she had plans for the weekend and they had already approved her day off. In return they told her, "be here or your fired." Well for me
I was really upset and there was no way I could break our date. So I thought about it, and it came to me.
Drag Up, thats when you tie all your tools to a rope and drag them to then next job. She was so up set because she did not know what to do, that is when I told her about dragging up. Her response was you mean quit, thats not an option, she had never just quit without a notice or reason.
We were both in confounded, not knowing what to do. So I suggested that she can work with me as a helper. All she had to do was carry her own weight. So she quit with no notice "and they also fired her" Well you can guess, we had a beautiful thanksgiving and a safe trip both ways, with full bellies.
Here is the jaw dropper. The next day on the local news there was a report about the store where Loretta was to have worked that night, had she not asked off and then subsequently quit.
On the night of thanksgiving, the girl who had to work in her place was working alone and an unknown man entered the empty store. The man robbed an raped the women doing her job!
My question is if I didnt tell Loretta about dragging up, or if I didnt go to this paper mill town, would Loretta still be with us?
One of many life saving stories, although the girl lived, I was still a part of this life saving event.
