  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Subsequent study provides all pieces which are necessary to compute the exact date and time of the death of Jesus.

The hour
1) Jesus died in the 9th hour (Mt 27:46-50 [ESV]), corresponding to 3 p.m. according to our Gregorian calendar.

The day
2) Jesus got crucified one day before the Jewish Pasqua festival (Mt 26:2-5 [ESV], Mt 27:62 [ESV])
3) After Jesus had died, Mary Magdalene bought spices to anoint Jesus' body the second day of Pasqua (Mk 16:1 [ESV]). The same story happened one day before the Sabbath (Lk 23:56 [ESV]). The Sabbath is 7th day in the Hebrew calendar. Ergo, Pasqua started on the 5th day and Jesus died on the 4th day, ranging from Tuesday 6pm to Wednesday 6pm according to our Gregorian calendar.

The year
4) John baptised Jesus in the 15th year of Tiberius Caesar (Lk 3:1-2 [ESV]), i.e. 29 A.D. Tiberius Caesar reigned from 18 September 14 AD – 16 March 37 AD (wikipedia).
5) Jesus lived during the time of the Highpriest Kajaphas, who was appointed from 18 A.D. - 36 A. D. (wikipedia).
6) Pasqua starts on 14 Nissan (Ex: 12-18[ESV]), the first month in the Jewish calendar. Nissan starts on first visible crescent after the spring equinox.
7) The U.S. Naval Observatory Astronomical Applications Department provides astronomical historical data (USNO). We just need to lookup for the date of the astronomical New Moon + 14 days + 1 extra day for the crescent be visible. All timings are in Local time i.e., Greenwich time + 2hrs. ** too late in the day for crescent to be seen the next evening.
Hence, Jesus died on Wed, 25 April 31 A.D. at 3 p.m. local time (Gregorian calendar).

8) Jesus said that he would be dead for 3 days and 3 nights (Mt 12:40 [ESV]). Hence,
Jesus got resurrected on Sat, 28 April 31 A.D. (Gregorian calendar).

9) A cross-check: Mary Magdalena went to the grave of Jesus early in the morning on the 1st day of the week (i.e. Gregorian Sunday), and the corpse of Jesus was not there (Mt 28:1-6 [ESV]).

Lest anyone interested in the topic accept the calculations too hastily, consider some disagreements with the assumptions. Also, the math seems wrong in calculating the day.

Here's another perspective on the day of the crucifixion.

Here's an article that is too deep to read about the topic as argued between a Catholic and a Seventh Day Adventist.

Consider that Jesus didn't say he would be dead for the time that Jonah spent in the whale. "For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." Matthew 12:40 (ESV). Being in the heart of the earth need not mean dead.

Being in the heart of the earth could be the beginning of his being in the hands of those who caused his suffering, on the night he was betrayed.

See the end of this article, which also presents an alternative to the idea that three days and three nights is a literal period of 72 hours.

Finally, the three days and three nights of Jonah began when he was eaten. On Thursday night of Holy Week, Jesus was eaten when he instituted the Eucharist, and his disciples consumed his Body and Blood under the species of bread and wine.

I like the scenario- it complies with Jesus's prophecy and fulfills the only sign he would give to mankind that He was the Messiah.
The good Friday and Sunday morning concept doesn't add up no matter how you try to figure it out.

er, yes it does. Unless one imposes modernist time measurement on to ancient thinking.

On the other hand this scenario throws out a major part of the theology of John's gospel, where the passion/resurrection follows the creation story:
day 6 Pilate declares "behold the man"
day 7 Jesus rests
day 8 - day 1 of the new creation, Jesus arises in the garden and is "mistaken" for the gardener.

The significance of the sign was the precise length of time Christ would be in the tomb. Christ was not saying that the sign of His Messiahship would be the fact of the resurrection, but, instead, the LENGTH OF TIME He would be dead, in the tomb.
Jesus tells us in John 11;9,10 there are 12 hours in the day and an equal time of darkness.
there are not three periods of twelve hours of daylight between Good Friday near sunset and Sunday morning while it was still dark.

A suggestion.... Perhaps the three hours of darkness while on the cross should be counted as night. After those three hours, the light did return for a brief time before sunset on that day.

Observe that Mary Magdalene bought spices to anoint Jesus' body one day AFTER the Sabbath (Mk16:1 [ESV]). In Luke 23:56 [ESV], however, it is written that the same Mary Magdalena bought spices to anoint Jesus' body one day BEFORE the Sabbath. Obviously, the authors of Mark and Luke talk about two different Sabbaths.

Was it the same women in both verses? Probably. Another translation allows for the purchase of spices on Friday and their attempted use on Sunday, or allows for the purchase of some additional spices on Sunday.

Says who?

Matt 12:38-40

The Pharisees wanted to see a sign as proof of Christ's credentials.
Jesus said the only sign He will be giving is of the prophet Jonas.
For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whales belly so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the ground.

The time frame Jesus was dead in the tomb was the only sign He would give us.
if you know of Him telling us of another sign He would give to prove His messiahship please show us.
The Good Friday, Easter Sunday time period contradict's Jesus' plain and clear statement as to how long in would be in the heart of the earth as absolute proof that He was the Son of God.

Because any old Tom, Dick or Harry can die for 48 hours and come back.

But don't you think Jesus would measure time according to the cultural norms of his culture rather than the cultural norms of our particular culture?

I believe He is using the standard for time in His day.
Gen 1:3-5. " .... and God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night.
And the evening (darkness) and the morning (light) were (together) the first day
The Hebrew word for " day " is Yom. It means a normal twenty-four hour day, commencing with sunset and ending with the next sunset.

Today we call a day twenty four hours long using midnight to midnight.

Why would we want to reject Jesus' divine revelation to us and follow man's interpretation?

After reviewing that verse in numerous translations of Holy Scripture, I see "heart of the earth" almost every time. Two read "grave," but one of those parenthetically refers to "heart of the earth." It's a colorable argument, but not conclusive enough to deny a doctrine.
