When does eating become gluttony?

Is it only if I eat so much I get very overweight or is it any eating beyond what's absolutely needed to survive? With other sins it's pretty obvious, stealing makes you a thief so don't do it at all, lying makes you a liar so don't do it at all, and so on. But eating is something I have to do so I can't just avoid the issue entirely.

Gluttony is generally defined as over-indulgence or over-consumption of food. When food consumption comes between you and Christ or His purpose for your life, it's becomes the sin of gluttony. Gluttony is a lot like drunkenness. When alcoholic consumption displaces God or reduces our ability to serve God's purpose, it is sinful. "You shall have no other gods before me."

Great points. Gluttony, like drunkenness, sexual immorality, and materialism are all ways we put ourselves before serving God. It's serving ourselves instead of Him. All of it is sin.

Obvious sins like gluttony and drunkenness can also turn us into stumbling blocks, damaging our witness and, potentially, turning others away from the Gospel.

Moreover, gluttony, alcoholism, drug abuse, even materialism are often substitutes for giving our lives and sins and struggles over to God. My wife is a dietitian. Many of her patients are "self-medicating" with food - treating emotional and psychological issues that, in Christians, should be given over to God.

Then, of course, we have the whole concept of the body being a temple ....

Hmmm ... when was the last time you heard a sermon on gluttony?

I could never figure out the traditional 7 deadly sins thing, because gluttony and greed seem to be synonymous to me personally.

Technically, the Seven Deadly Sins don't exist in the Bible. Proverbs 6 does mention six sins that God hates, seven that He finds detestable.

"There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community."

As you can see, gluttony is not mentioned in this passage. Gluttony, and surrounding subject matter, is mentioned in a number of places:
Philippians 3:19
Proverbs 23:20, 21
Proverbs 23:2
Proverbs 25:16
1 Corinthians 3:16, 17
Psalm 78:18
Deuteronomy 21:20
1 Corinthians 6:12 (Being enslaved by something, e.g. gluttony)

... and, of course, many more.

I throw all sin under the same idea: it is anything you place before God all the time.

Maybe if you are too full to eat, but you see dessert and want it, but eat 3 slices of cake anyways and can barely move afterwards, maybe that is considered gluttony. Ive been guilty of that many times. Im sure there is a more detailed and contextual meaning to Gluttony.

The purpose of the seven deadly sins in Western thought has been that they are, in a sense, the the contrast to the Seven Virtues, the Seven Virtues are chastity, temperance, charity, diligence, patience, kindness, and humility.

Chastity vs lust
Temperance vs gluttony
Charity vs avarice
Diligence vs acedia
Patience vs wrath
Kindness vs envy
Humility vs vainglory

Cultivating the virtues being part of a dutiful Christian life in order to curb the passions and appetites of the flesh, expressed in the vices.

I think the seven vices or seven deadly sins is better understood as the seeds from which sin sprouts, it's obviously not intended as an exhaustive list of sins, but rather addresses the baser appetites and impulses which lead to every manner of sin. Sinful acts and sinful thoughts spring from the appetites, what Western theology has often called concupiscience--the inwardly-directed desire of man.

Sin has sometimes been described as inordinate desire. It can also be said that sin is an inordinate desire for a good thing. The root desire is for a good thing. Food is a good thing. Sex is a good thing. Money is a good thing, but any or all of these good things become sinful when there are disordered. They are either placed higher then they ought; therefore usurping God's place in our lives, or there are twisted/distorted/perverted in some way.

The cure for gluttony is the same cure for all sin - a stronger desire. Chalmers does a great job explaining this in his book:
The Expulsive Power of a New Affection
by Thomas Chalmers (Author)

As far as how one knows he is a glutton, I would venture a guess that a glutton knows that he is a glutton, and if he is honest with himself, he will admit it.

I think its when you make food your idol and put it before God.

When Jesus fasted in the wildnerness the devil tempted him,,he said you can make thee stones bread, and Jesus was really hungry, he could have. But he didnt. He said man doesnt live by bread alone but by every word thAt comes from the Mouth of God.

If being drunk is when you have had to much alcohol then gluttony is when you had to much to eat. But I question what the bible is really getting at here. With being drunk is it talking every instance you've had "one too many" or is it talking about habitual drunkenness 'cause I get the feeling it is closer to the latter. The same goes for gluttony is this about the spoonful that puts you over the top or habitual over-eating. I have a feeling the two should be defined similarly and if you can on occasion indulge a little with food then the same should be said with alcohol but if one is forbidden then other should be too.

I don't think it's one more drink or one more fork full. It's not even about an amount of time as @Manny325 suggested. It's when food, drink, boats, Corvettes, whatever comes between you and God. "You shall have no other gods before me."
