It seems that quite a few things are starting to grow, despite the weather being fairly cool and wet. Too wet unfortunately to do much outside. I'm hoping for a dry, mild day this week to move things around a bit, and then leave it another month before getting the pots into their summer positions and buying some more plants for the flower bed.

We had a bitterly cold but dry day today, my husband trimmed some trees, bulbs are beginning to show...anything can happen! Looking forward to Spring...it feels good...

It's been cold here too, but not much rain in the last three days. I managed to tidy up the garden this week, but kept the pots together as cold weather is forecast. The hyacinths are coming through, as are some of the daffodils. I'm wondering about pruning some of the other plants, but think I ought to wait until warmer weather.

You can expect some frost 'burning' if everything remains 'wet'
best leave pruning until we have had two or three dry days
and you know what Umbrella City is-like ?

the lavendar plant has been frozen back by the cold, but the daffodills are up and showing buds now.
the birdbath is frozen or thawed depending on the weather, (and filled to the brim from today's rain.)
and we've some yellow and red rain on the way in about an hour. with winds.
there is a small pile of brown oak leaves on the porch, blown there by the wind.
and still a few berries left on the holly tree.

both the male mocking birds and robins have been scouting their territories,
and the squirrels have been retrieving burried nuts.

That's a very evocative description pdudgeon ; I can imagine your garden from it. It sounds like you have a mix of the seasons there! Just wondering what is "yellow and red rain"? I'm in the UK, so it may be a term not used here.

Yes Dave, I'll leave the pruning, but don't want this year's growth to start before I get to do it. However the weather is just too cold now, with risk of frosts.

the 'yellow and red rain' is what we see on our tv or computer screens from the local weather report.
the weather stations around here use Doplar radar to scan the storms from top to bottom.
They can tell us how strong a storm is, which direction it is going, the cities that it will affect,
and the time that the storm will arrive.

In esence it is an "early warning system", and a very good one at that.

the categories of the Doplar system measure the amount of rain that falls per minute,
and then assign a color value to each measurement.

thus light rain would be seen on the map as a light green in color (dodge the raindrops),
normal rain as medium green (umbrella needed),
harder rain as dark green (hang on tight to the umbrella, need boots and raincoat as well)

yellow pelting rain means "speed up those wipers and slow down to a crawl if driving",
orange or red rain (the sky is falling) as "danger outside-shelter inside".

yellow, orange, and red rain is often accompanied by lightening and thunder,
whereas orange and red rains often include wind squalls, and possible tornadoes.

if there is a black spot on the radar where the pixels of dark green and dark red meet, that is a tornado.

I think ours would be mainly green rain, with occasional yellow. However "frequent" could be added to the description!

around our area a "yellow" rainstorm is also called a 'frog strangler', because if the frog opens it's mouth to croak during one of those storms, it's very likely that he will croak---literally! (drown)

temp is in the mid 50's here today, cloudy skies and a faint breeze.
the water in the bird bath is ruffled and still by turns.
there's a dead oak leaf floating on the water, being pushed or pulled by the breezes in their turn.
the parking lot is full--everyone must be sleeping in this morning,
still in hybernation mode.
