• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

maybe you have a chemical imbalance or maybe you arent as close to the LORD as much as you have been before.

Mike,

Be careful with that last statement! I've beat my head against the wall for months trying to figure out "why" I am so unhappy. Having grown up in the Christian culture, my first instinct is always to figure out if there is any sin in my life separating me from God.

Truthfully, that kind of statement can really mess a person up. I am finally going in on Monday to talk to a therapist, but because of the prevailing Christian attitude/stigma attached to depression, I have only told my husband and my best friend (who is bipolar, incidentally!) that I am going. I don't plan on ever bringing it up with my in-laws...extreme fundamentalists who believe all mental disorders are made up by "quacks" who are looking to give people an excuse to sin!

I thank you for acknowledging that it COULD be a chemical imbalance. I encourage you to do even more research on depression and other mood disorders.

To the OP, I would encourage you to find someone that you can talk to...I bit the bullet and made the appointment, and it was one of the hardest things in the world for me to do. I even had a nightmare last night that I ended up in a mental institution - but I'm going to do it, and I'm going to get answers!! We can beat this!

well I dont know ...I said maybe didnt I ? im sorry if I got the right message across.. I myself had clinical depression and though I got some Joy now I still probably have it.. sometimes I am mute dont want to speak in most situations probably coz my body emotional energy is too low and cant stirr myself to me interested in nothing.
In my case I KNOW I did many wicked sins.. including being addicted to porn and I u'se to know the LORD a bit before.. So I have reason to think it was because of sin.. and the psalms related so much to me.
But some people havent anything like what I and still feel depressed severly - It could be a chemical imbalance I dont know..

But as St John Chrysostom said "There is not a single illness out of all the illnesses that burden human nature, neither spiritual nor physical, which could not receive doctoring from the Scriptures"

I mean sorry if I got the WRONG message across..
I would also like to say dont feel guilty that you are depressed.. Its not a sin to feel lowish just dont give in to despair thats a sin.
And not necessarily your ungrateful it could be a chemcal imbalance or maybe you need to find fullfillment through purpose in life..

Anyway did Jesus say any of the things you said will make you happy? having everything external okay like family and work no troubles?
No only He can make you truly happy!

I definitely agree that only Jesus can give us true joy!

It's just important to remember that despression is a physical disease that manifests itself in our emotions. If a person is truly clinically depressed, it is not a spiritual condition or a matter of getting right with God - it's a matter of getting treatment, the same way a person would go to the doctor to get fixed if they broke their arm!
