  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What's wrong with James Randi's million dollar challenge?

Kent Hovind had a simular challenge. I don't know why people do this. It is just makes everyone look stupid.

Kent Hovind's challenge was deliberately unwinnable though; regardless of the truth behind evolution. He asked for things not covered by evolution, and for things not required by any form of scientific investigation. Plus HE selected the judges (who would always be anonymous) and HE deemed any submissions worthy of "their" time.

In short, there's no comparison!

Randi's paranormal challenge is completely different in that Hovind basically wanted claimants to recreate the Universe in a lab whereas Randi's is pretty simple - claim you can do X and then demonstrate X.

He was right to reject the breatharians for the same reason he's right to reject people who claim they can spend half-an-hour under water or have their arm chopped off and that it will grow back. Some claims are just so ludicrous they're not worth entertaining.

Breatharians are also more problematic for testing than someone who claims a superpower-like ability like teleportation or levitation. Both of those can be tested in a controlled environment in a pretty short amount of time. It could take weeks for a breatharian to either give up or die in the process of being tested.
