Ok so I'm totally clueless just came in here to have a surf around and see what I could find.

I noticed in alot of threads people mention taking your temp.
I've also heard alot of people talk about taking your temp when TTC.

Can someone explain to me why you do this?

like i said I'm totally clueless

If you take your temperature every day at the same time, first thing, after at least 4 hrs of sleep you can see a pattern over your cycle. There is a spike at the time you ovulate. So some people use their temp to make sure they are ovulating, some to identify when they ovulated.

If you use it with other things you can use it to avoid or achieve pregnancy. Personally, I don't use it for either. I wouldn't be able to remember

I was temping when I was TTC, my DH gets up for work as 6am so when the alarm went of I stuck the thermometer in my mouth! Then I would write the resuts in my diary and chart them on a site like fertility friend. I actually found it very helpful! I found it much much easier than OPK's (ovulation predictor kits), and checking the mucous...

We use mucus for birth control.

In basic terms (because it is different for every woman), your cycle can be divided up into 4 parts:
1. your period (infertile)
2. waiting to ovulate (infertile)
3. fertile phase including ovulation
4. waiting for your period after ovulation (infertile)

You 'observe' your mucus and there will be fertile mucus in that third phase that isn't there during the rest of your cycle. You know how you can tell when you get your period because you can feel the moisture?? Learning to notice feelings of moisture throughout your cycle, and observing the mucus itself (when you go to the loo, you see it) means you can know when you're fertile phase begins. If you want to be pregnant you have sex, if not you avoid sex until three days after the mucus stops.

Billings (which we use to avoid pregnancy) is based on this and is 98% effective.

Actually taking your temperature can be a part of trying to avoid pregnancy as well, taking your basic morning temperature tells you when you've ovulated and once you've established ovulation you can have sex as much as you want with no condoms or anything and not worry about getting pregnant. Taking your temperature is part of the sympto-thermal method of Natural Family Planning. We used FAM and apparently had a condom issue, just for note. I think its a wonderful thing to know these things about your body so I plan to teach my daughter(s) once they are teens about the different parts of the cycle... pre-ovulation, what the mucus means, etc. I think all women should know! I recommend the book Taking Charge Of Your Fertility

ok first of all eewwwww and second what can you tell from the mucous?
Checking CM really isn't as weird/gross as it sounds, but checking cervical position and texture can be ....

WOW i have a new found respect for TTCers the things you will through to try and have a bubs
What's easy for most women isn't so easy for some of us. TTC is like other things in life - sometimes we work harder than everyone else but still may not see results.
