I grew up in a "from scratch" household. I still cook everything from scratch.
Recently a friend served packaged "rice-a- roni" I was an instant fan.
I had recipes for various fried rice dishes but rice-a-roni is a delicious difference so I researched homemade rice-a-roni.
I brown the broken bits of spaghetti and rice in butter. *Simmer in chicken broth or beef broth with different spice blends for 18 minutes.
Meanwhile, depending on the flavor I want, I brown up shrimp, or ground sausage or chopped chicken and voila, delicious rice-a-roni!
Sometimes I add carrots and /or peas or other vegetables.
I mix the rice, meat and vegetable together to make a one dish meal.
I experiment with different spice blends. I am eating rice a roni quite often now, so quick easy and fun to make. It is delicious with shrimp although I like the ground pork but then again, chicken is pretty tasty also.
And still 100% from scratch.
