Zoii, I'm not sure if you have kids, but you certainly were one at one time. Praying is the way we talk to God and our Savior.
Prayer doesn't have to be and should not be a tool for asking for things all the time. It is a time for thankfulness, questions, requests, sharing....

To God, you are like His child. He wants to hear from you all the time. Think of your parents, what if you never said a word about anything unless you wanted something or were hurt or just said a quick thank you.

No, God wants us to pray continually, just like your parents want to know how you are doing, your goals, you accomplishments, your frustrations.

Sure, God knows your prayers before you pray them. Yet, lots of times I know what my kids want before they ask. Sometimes I give them what they want or need before they ask but it's far more relational and connecting if they come to me and ask politely for something....

Our relationship with our savior is a lot like a relationship with a parent or guardian in many many ways.

Praying is not a waste of time. Even if your answers seem to be "no" much of the time.

Asking God for things and favors is not a terribly good prayer. Think of prayer as taking time to connect with God. Try being quiet and letting the light of God shine on you.

Turn your prayers in to a sacrifice of deep love for God.

Prayer can be difficult. I know as i struggle with prayer. But, persevere. Show God that no matter what, you will adore Him and worship Him for all your life.

I have said many times that i feel as though i am hitting my head against a wall when praying to God. But, i wont give up!! I will keep knocking on God's door!

God bless you

the point of praying is develop our obedience to God's will and trust in His promises to us as His people.

philippians 4:6-7
james 1:2-8
james 4:1-4

we also pray because while God is omniscient(isaiah 46:9-10), we are not, as we ourselves don't know what God has decreed for us from one day to the next.

No my friend, I'm not the one who makes judgements, I'm just trying to figure out why your prayers are not working.

Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear? - Genesis 17:17

Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also? - Genesis 18:12

Believing God for the miraculous...

I to have had problems like this. I have been very frustrated with a lack of response from prayer and have stopped praying at times for months.
Mind you I suppose He might also be frustrated with my lack of response when He communicates with me.
It cuts both ways that knife.
But you ask what the point of it is and I would say "Relationship" it is all about relationship with Him.

How would you ever know that you are hearing from God and not having an internal conversation with yourself?
Well ultimately you don't. In the same way that you could never know that you are not a solitary brain in a vat.

So what's the point of prayer then? How many people are actually hearing from God and how would you know?

What's the point of doing anything? Same answer.

I would suggest that you're likely looking at praying wrong. Not understanding what praying is.

Praying is how the born again believer talks to his Father. Jesus prayed regularly and he was the Son of God. Jesus didn't always get what he prayed for either. He asked his Father to not put him through the pain and suffering of the cross, but acquiesced that if it was His will, then he would do it. I'm confident that Jesus didn't always go to prayer always asking his Father to do things for him. He merely bowed and humbled himself before his Father, as a subject does before a king, and talked to his Father.

We, those who are born again, have that same access to communicate with our Father. I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm regularly thanking God for His mercy and His love. I'm always thanking Him for the blessings that fill the days of my life. The very fact that life exists and that I am a part of that life is a blessing that I am aware of every day of my life and I give my Father thanks for that in prayer. I regularly thank Him for sending forth His word that I might know Him and His purposes and what He wants of me. Where would I be without the Scriptures? How would I even know who God was if He hadn't taken the initiative to raise up a nation of people to record His words and protect them so that when I came along thousands of years later, they were still here for me to know Him. I give thanks to God all the time for that wonderful, wonderful blessing to which I owe my entire everlasting future which would be lost without all that He had done. I thank Him often and regularly for the guidance and wisdom of the Holy Spirit. The friend and companion that convicts me of my sin and also of the way of righteousness. I give my Father heartfelt thanks for these things all the time and I do it through prayer.

Yes, when I have a particular struggle I also take that before my Father and ask Him for peace regarding the situation if it's something that I can't change. Help in changing it, if, just as Jesus did, it is His will. God is not some magic genie that you pop out of the lamp whenever things aren't going well. He is a friend and partner in life and I communicate with Him about all these things through prayer.

What value is there in prayer? It is of inestimable value for His children born of His Spirit. For all the rest, probably not much value at all. Prayer doesn't save anyone, but it is a great and comforting process through which the children of God speak with their Father. I'm fairly well convicted that, just as God warned Israel that their rebellion would cause Him not to hear their prayers, He doesn't listen to many of the prayers sent up to Him by those who are not His children...except for the prayer of a seeking heart seeking after Him.

God bless you,
In Christ, Ted

Somethings to keep in mind for the sake of clarity.

1. God is not running on "auto-pilot" - read the end of Matt 23 or John 1:11 and you will see.

2. You are not running on "auto-pilot" ... try sleeping in instead of going to work - you will see your "behavior change" in response to what work tells you about doing such a thing.

3. The Bible tells us to pray - and it is certain that God uses problems to drive us to pray - and seek God - "ask and you shall receive... seek and you shall find...knock and it shall be opened unto you" -- Matthew 7.

It does not say "Auto-pilot I am... auto-pilot you are... just sit back and watch what just-so-happens"
