What I'm suggesting is that the immunity must develop in the generation of weeds that survived the poison spray. If they died they couldn't pass anything on.
No. That's not how it works. It is quite possible that none are immune and they all die (as is most likely the case as weed killer is deadly stuff).
However, if one is already immune it will not die and it will spread until the killzone is populated with plants who will have inherited the immunity.
The same thing happens with antibiotics. If one stops taking the antibiotics until the infection is destroyed the ones not yet destroyed (who by definition had resistance to the antibiotic) will spread and will be more resistant to the next course of antibiotics. Each time the course is not completed the more resistance bacteria carry on until the resistance is to stiff for the anti biotic.
Thus individuals do not evolve: populations evolve.
