Tho some are outside of the "stereotypical" SB churches, most are non-Charismatic. They don't believe in the gifts of the Spirit, don't raise hands or such in worship. Just quiet types of people. They do believe you must be born again, which is the main thing.

Southern Baptists have a headquarters somewhere, and any decisions that affect a SB church (their new minister, whether or not to transfer the current one, whether or not to build, etc.) are made by headquarters.

Non-denominational churches do not have a headquarters. Any decisions that affect that church are made by that church.

Ask an elder or pastor from her church for their "what we believe" type statement. Typically churches have these available printed out somewhere.

I just searched and found this, which might help: http://www.sbc.net/

Look under Position Statements and Statements of Faith.

Hi! I found something for you, and I hope it helps! Baptists believe in the Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). They believe that Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary, died on the cross for our sins, and ressurection. Jesus will come back to judge us all. It is also believed that they are saved by Grace alone. They believe in heaven and hell. They also emphasize evangelism and missions. I got this from the "Denominations Comparision" by Rose Publishing that I picked up at a Christian bookstore. I hope it helps some! Have a great day!!! (This is in addition to all that has already been said).

The difference?
It really depends upon the type and style of the Non-Denominational church you go to. Some are quite comparable and some are totally different.

The only consistant difference would be ...
The Non-Denom looks at SBC and says "Brother Christian, member of the Body of Christ".
The SBC looks at the Non-Denom and says,"your not Baptist".

Sorry Homie, but that is not true, Southern Baptists churches are not under any denominational headquarters or authority whatsoever, all decisions made for the local church are made by that local church, the SBC has no control over local churches at all. The SBC is a group of Baptists churches that are" voluntarily Associated " with one another, each local church is only under the headship of Jesus Christ.

A typical SBC church shares alot in common with most non-denom churches and vice-versa, believer baptism, immersion, Lord's Supper, local church authority, pastor and deacons, etc.., if you took all SBC churches as a whole, and all non-denom churches as a whole and boiled them down, outside of the sign on the door, you probably wouldn't see much difference,

As far as atlaw302 explaining the difference to his G/F, their might not be any significant difference to explain, but it might be alot, depends on what his non-denom church is like, and as far as a Baptist looking at a Non-Denom and saying, "you're not Baptist", I know that I would never say that, I don't really care if a person is Baptist or not, I would probably say that if a person knew what makes a church "Baptist", they might be surprised about how "Baptist" their own church is.

I'm not trying to shoot anyone down or stir up trouble here, but hopely shed a little light on the subject, I don't see non denoms as being on the other side of the fence, but as my brothers ans sisters in Christ, peace...................

If you're trying to compare one specific non-denominational church to one specific southern baptist church, you might not come up with many differences at all. Or, there might be more different with the two churches than the same. While all southern baptist churches are not going to be exactly the same, there are certrain doctrines and practices that will be quite similar from one congregation to the other.

A non-denominational church might be baptistic in flavor, but it might also be pentecostal, neo-orthodox, catholic, presbyterian, lutheran, restoration, or some other flavor (or combination of flavors).

The only difference between the Southern Baptist churches and the non-denominational churches is that the Baptist's have a written creed. If a person was not aware of that then they sure would not notice any difference between the churches at all.

That is incorrect. While some non-denominational churches are baptistic in their beliefs, many are nothing at all like baptist churches.
