Agreed there, if you have the skill, build it yourself. Dells are alright otherwise. don't buy an emachine. they're cheap....that's all they have going for them. cheap hardware means it won't last. ultimately, if you can, or know someone who can help you with it, do it yourself.

It's hard to point out a specific machine, because it depends on what you want to do with it. AMD processors are generally pretty reliable and a whole lot cheaper then pentium anything. Especially if you game at all, AMDs are nice there. even if you don't, I prefer them to pentium any day of the week.

check out Ibuypower.com. they have some pretty nice prebuilt computers for cheap. this one for example:

it's completely customizable, but base price is $798.

build one yourself. You can make and AWESOME machine for $500. Imagine what the extra $300 will do! Go buy the best parts you can and put 'em together. Thats the best computer, will always be. Then go get Mandrake 10.1 and put it on there.

My custom build cost around $1000 a year and a half ago. But I also got some extra stuff that you don't need. If you drop those it was probably around $750-800, and in order to get Half Life 2 to lag, I have to jack the detail almost to maximum. (actually, everything was at maximum except for AA and Antistropy (sp?), both at 2x) It would probably be a lot cheaper now.

stay away from Celeron if you can, for about the same price you can get an
amd 64-bit cpu which is far better, even the best IMO. Check out the emachine T6212, I think it's the best deal going out there right now for a full system (-monitor). 160gig hard drive, double-layer DVD burner, an amd 64-bit 3200+ CPU, ATI 128mb graphics chip, PCI-E video card expansion slot, DDR400 memory (great speed) and ATI chip set. It's a good system if you want to build up a great game system and quite fine to run stock out of the box. It goes for under $600 so with that extra money saved it would be best to pump up the memory to 1gig or more (bought in pairs). You can find the T6212 at Best Buy, Circuit City or most places that cary name brand models.

Yeah I would have asked that too but generally budget computers are all the same. ...well not all the same... some are really worthless.
