Actually being non-profit means little...there was a really good article in Crains Business that said one of the main guys behind Firefox is already in development stages with Google...it would make sense for Google to do this in a number of ways and vice versa....they dont have to stay nonprofit....and whoever said the stuff about waiting for Google to do this and that? Could you have said anything more stupid? I use Firefox now....what you said makes no sense...its common knowledge though that once a bigger company buys something the less known company will become more known...AOL was nothing until Time Warner bought it.

For free or not, Firefox! Glad it's free :)
Over the past 12 years or so I went from IE to Netscape to Mozilla and now Firefox/Thunderbird. I also use Konqueror and also Lynx now and then. So pretty much Firefox and Konqueror.

Hi all ,

Well I've been using Firefox as default browser , for 2-3 weeks now , while still using IE for specific browsing tasks .

Firefox hasn't failed yet . While IE was shutting down on me about once or twice a week .

But part of the trouble was probably some left-overs from a high-jack atempt . Which was removed about the time the switch was made .

Yet , today I noticed IE quit for a short while again , but the Fox kept me online .

Below is a link to read more about Firefox Mozilla etc.

Wikipedia Free Encyclopedia - Firefox

This part of the Encyclopedia's discourse seemed like it might be particularly interesting for those who know a lot about computer codes and the like .

" In addition, Mozilla (including Firefox) has a security "bug bounty" system: people who report a valid critical security bug receive a $500 (US) cash reward (for each report) and a Mozilla T-shirt . "

Happy Browsing

I really am into Mozilla Firefox! The thing that I /really/ like about it is how well it blocks /prevents pop-ups that IE seemingly encourages. Also, some websites that are not in-and-of-themselfs bad...but promote bad pop-ups...I can go to now becuase FireFox blocks everything so well! So yeah, and the tabbed browsing is pretty awesome too.

???

1. Common knowledge is more commonly known as folklore.
2. Many smaller companies bought by Microsoft simply ceased to exist, along with their names and recognition for their accomplishments (eg. several small java development companies, symbian, visio, etc...).
3. AOL was actually much more successful before Time Warner bought it, and became "nothing" (speaking of their stock value plunge).
4. Google has a celebrated policy of "not doing evil", so I would find it quite out of character for them to do anything that would result in a detriment to the overall computing community, especially the open source community. But anythings possible...

Take Adobe for example....when Photoshop was first created it was just Photoshop from a smaller company...now every one in the world knows it as Adobe Photoshop...same principle here...some people know about Firefox, but if Google were to buy...the entire world would find out more about it. The average consumer doesnt read magazines or message boards, they use IE as that is what has been given them...if a bigger company were to get on board with Firefox and convince people like Dell, MPC, Gateway, etc to ship it with pre-loaded Firefox, Google would make a fortune off of that name...thus that is why Crain's thinks it would be a brilliant move by Google to by them.

Hey while I can think of a number of examples where aquisition has been bad, you also cite some examples of where it worked well. With that in mind, I can only imagine how great it would be if Google were to promote Firefox from their website as they are to "search engines" what MS Windows is to "Desktop Operating Systems". So I could definitely see this as a "good thing". All they would have to do is put the equivalent of a proverbial icon on their desktop (link to downloading Firefox) prominently on their website and this could have a very interesting effect on raising the awareness and benefit of becoming that much more diversified and less dependent on one vendor for everything.

Now that is something I can appreciate. A person may simply like one better than the other, but it is an informed decision while recognizing a limitation and using something else when the need is felt necessary. Using a tool based on its' merit to meet a need. This is in my opinion a very fair and appropriate way to go about doing things. That is until the "means" becomes complicit in supporting a criminal entity, and you become faced with a choice to look the other way or do something else; at that point I would depart ways even with a tool that does things better, rather than take the position that "the ends justify the means" at the expense of being guilty of just standing by and doing nothing in the face of some injustice. Of course, how each comes to terms with this and chooses to respond is a deeply personal decision and each should have the freedom to choose for themselves free from being "condemned" for why or how they came to that decision.
