  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Just curious as to what the average age range should be when looking for a date.
I am 34, but I like women who are between the age of 20-30.
Is that too young?
I personally dont have a problem with age differences as I have said before, but what about the women? If you were 20 or so, and a 34 year old asked you out, How would you react??

It depends on what kind of guy he is. It also depends on whether he's been married before and whether he has children...I'm not sure I would want to date someone in either situation. It all depends on God's will and how well I know him... there are so many factors. Age wouldn't be as big of a deal though. As long as our maturity levels are similar and spiritual maturity is at a similar level.

You should read my post in the Young Adults forum on age differences.

I obviously don't have a problem considering I'm practically head over heels for a 32yr old man...if he asked me out tomorrow I'd say yes in a flash...before he had a chance to change his mind ;)

I have to second the idea that you should be with someone on the same spiritual and maturity levels. :)

I'm 26, and I kinda have a crush on a 37 year old....does that help?

In Christ,

I've seen perfectly natural and happy marriages go by with 10-12 year differences. In one, the woman was older - she actually died before her husband, so you never truly know.

For those who read Jane Austin, her book Emma is set a ways back in time. Her character, Mr. Knightly, is 39 and Emma is 21 at the time of the book. Emma was a self-possessed and capable young woman and a good match. Just a note for the high romance folks of the world.

You just got major points for using Jane Austen as an example...

Lol...as to the question, it's different for everyone. Personally, if I was 20 (I'm close...but not quite), I'd handle it just like I would if he was my age. Some 20 year olds are immature and not funny...on the verge of poopy...so I want to be cautious. Same with older guys...look at who he is. My mom said something funny to my 23 year old sister once: "You're 23 now, Kerri! Anywhere from 20-40 is open territory!" Lol...coming from my mom...haha! ^_^

You also have to look at society during the time period of when these novels were written as well as when they take place. It was more common then that fathers marry of their daughters to men who are quite a bit older.

My dad kept bugging me about finding someone and getting married. At the park where I run at, there are always a bunch of old guys walking. I told him I'm finding a 90-year old guy at the park, become an Anna-Nicole Smith, wait for him to die and have some cash in the bank. ;) Who'd have thunk it that I'd end up finding a younger man?

On a serious note, I'm not sure if there is an "appropriate" age bracket. I suppose to varies from person to person. I personally never saw myself with a man seven years older than I. I couldn't imagine dating a man around my father's age or even 10 years younger. Gives me the heebie-jeebies.

The same kind of heebie-jeebies that 34 year old men finding 20-year old women for dates and prospective wives. I think most 20-year old girls are not mature enough to be dating a man that old and the relationship is/would be mostly physical.

Something about that seems creepy to me... look at it this way... you're 14 years older than a 20 year, old enough to be her father if you were raunchy as a kid.

Call me a conservative but I just don't feel that age gaps like that are appropriate ever. I feel bad about being interested in chicks that are four years younger than me, let alone 14.

I'd say a 4-5 year age gap is probably the most I'd like to see (at any age) AFTER both of the two are over 18.

I don't know. I guess I get angry when I see old men staring at young girls... and look at it this way. Women have a longer life expectancy than men. Lets just say on average they live five years longer than men. So if you marry somebody 15 years yonger than you, the liklihood that she'll live twenty years past your death is pretty high. Are you going to be selfish enough to want your wife to be alone for that long? If the answer is yes, then you probably shouldn't be marrying her.
Conservative doesn't come to mind.

You get angry??? What business is it of yours? Unless you are her father. But kudos on trying to justify your position on how others should be.

My grandfather and grandmother were over 20 years different. Just so you know from where I'm coming. I don't take lightly to people attacking them. Me? Go for it, but not them.

As I said before, if her father has no problem with it, and she has no problem with it, then that's two doors the Lord hasn't closed. Pray about it and He will guide you. Better Him than following man's opinions.

Creepy?? Old men???
Im hardly old, lol!!!!!!!!
Plus I dont look my age, or so I am told... people usually guess me at 25-27.
Also, If I were to get married to someone 14 years younger and died, then I would want her to remarry if she wanted to. Im not a selfish lover.
Is it really that bad to be interested in 20 something girls??

hmmm... does it make a difference which one is older, the man or the woman?
Nope , not really. The original question was posed to the females of the group but yeah I think it would be interesting to see what a 20 year old man would do if a 34 year old woman wanted to date him.
