I'm starting to think political correctness and social media is starting to ruin friendships. People are afraid to say what's on their mind or share their own opinions, thoughts, and beliefs or risk being unfriended.

i disagree with a lot of my friends, but we respect eachother
i probably lost a few "friends"
but they were not really great people if they would unfriend me over political stuff

I thinking people are more likely to make intense statements, and more likely to be offended by other's statements on the internet.

I think it's important to say things gently and think about how it might offend other people... Especially on the internet. I also think it's best to discuss things in person, or at least on a person-to-person basis.

My beliefs don't change based on who I'm with, but the way I state them does.

Yeah I've been unfriended for a whole host of stuff. For example, when I made an anti-Obama post. I reckon there were more Obama supporters than I thought. And lately I had a friend on Facebook who was unfriending people left and right for their stance on gay marriage once the ruling went through. Called them all bigots.

I always think that's funny because a bigot is someone who is intolerant of other people and their ideals, etc. If you're unfriending people and calling them bigots, that makes you one as well, right? Or does it only go the way YOU want it to go?

Sorry, just venting a bit on here I guess. Not about gay marriage or any issue, but the fact that free speech isn't free anymore. Someone is always offended and can't handle a dissenting opinion.

No I fully understand. I have been told off for being a biggot when I said the biblical view of gay and such.

We live in a society that has to accept everyone and every thing. We cannot tell people they are wrong. If we offend, people call us out. People even get arrested for preaching on the street because it offends people.

But, Jesus said that the world will hate us because they hated him first. All we can do is pray for people, show them the gospel, and let God water the seed.

Politics is so ridiculous... its all reactionary and all that the loudest people in politics care about is the "hot button" issues. In the meantime, issues that could have a more severe impact get ignored.

I think it's tricky sometimes to find the balance between supporting your ideals and offending the other position. For example: I don't like Obama's economic policies and I hate some of his foreign policy decisions. If I'm around conservatives, I'll be more likely to say that I don't like Obama either. If I'm around liberals, I need to be specific and mention what exactly I don't like and why, and make sure they understand I don't hate them for voting for Obama. There's a lot of stuff on FB that implies people who voted for Obama are stupid or just wanting free stuff. A lot of anti-Obama people share it without realizing how insulting that could be to some of their friends who don't fit those categories.

I have a lot of friends on both sides, on Facebook. So I don't share anti-Obama stuff because I don't want to offend people.

I want to state my mind, BUT I don't want to seem like I'm biased against Obama and hate everything he does. So I'll use up all their tolerance talking about Obama's economic policies, not complaining about him playing golf.

I think it's more pronounced in the US because there aren't many popular middle-ground news sources. It's either vehemently for or vehemently against. So it's no surprise there's such a divide.

I don't recommend it, really. Telling people they're wrong just makes them mad, and often more set in their ways.

You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. It's better to try and help them realize they're wrong.

Good points.

My issue is those who want to shut up ALL dissenting points of views. And they know how to do it. You're for traditional marriage? You're a homophobe and bigot (not true). You're against Obama? You're racist (not true). I like to discuss and debate, but with other adults who can share their side and their issues without name calling and stomping their feet.

The thing is that people are growing up being told they are always right, always good, and that no one will disagree with them. That is why they act like children the minute you disagree with them. They never had to deal with that when they where younger so they do not know how to deal with that when they are older.

I think things are going to get worse
