Thank you, you guys are all so helpful. I'm always here to support all of you too.

Wow, sounds like a good place to stay away from. I think you made the right choice to leave.

Yeah, I totally agree and understand about the art sites. I know one thing that frustrated me about that one was that unless you drew humans or realistic animals (neither of which I drew, most of the time) no one really cared about your art unless they were your friend.

She is a serenely pensive person much of the time. ^-^

Newgrounds for me was an awesome website but terrible community. The users there are not known for their intelligence, friendliness, or humility.

Art is incredibly subjective. A lot of times it takes luck and timing for a certain style to be well liked. Vincent van Gogh's art didn't become popular until years after his death. Jackson Pollock made a fortune from dripping paint on a canvas. Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa painting didn't get widespread fame until after the painting was stolen from an art museum and later recovered. Paintings during the 1400's to 1800's used to be incredibly detailed while many notable paintings today are just a shape here and another shape there.

Plus with the internet and incredibly useful drawing software, competition is fiercer than ever before. The masters of the renaissance would have a harder time gaining the acclaim they got for their art if they lived today.

I understand that. I'm sorry to hear you had to go through that, I can relate.

That makes sense about luck and timing too. Art is definitely subjective and much more competitive these days!

It was my decision to stay there for 10 years so there isn't really anything to be sorry about. At first I found their cynical sense of humour entertaining during my teenage years but eventually you hit an age where teen angst loses its appeal and want to be around more positive people. The term, "Misery loves company" rings especially true for Newgrounds.

I also have some things to be thankful for Newgrounds such as my photoshop skills, knowledge of different software and lots of entertaining animations and games produced by a system that minimized Sturgeon's Law as much as it could.

That makes sense about luck and timing too. Art is definitely subjective and much more competitive these days!

I bet if you went back in time during the Renaissance era and showed people your art, you could probably get some commissions by the Pope for your new a revolutionary style of art. Back then only a handful of people were educated in reading and writing and less in the arts and sciences. What you know now already gives you a profound advantage in finding a job during those days, including art.

Good point. Even if you don't enjoy a site forever, it's always good to get some enjoyment and even learn from it while you do enjoy it. I'm glad that Newgrounds helped you out in some ways!

Maybe it would have been easier for me to get an art-related job back in those days. I know it's so hard to get one now. There's so much competition. The one I did try for was frustrating because other people who weren't any better than me got the job easily while I tried over and over again, and they still didn't want me no matter how much I improved. But now I don't think I'd be happy with that job anyway. There are always more chances for all of us, at least.

I'm sure our art would be much different if we lived back in those days, too.

Excited! Kate Covington is back to singing!

She just uploaded the first song in, like, three years, due to a throat condition where she wondered if she would ever be able to use her lovely voice for the God-given talent she possesses again. And she sounds as awesome as ever!

Yay!

So many people want to make art these days... but I have to wonder what their motivations are, whether they really get joy out of creating, or if they're just trying to be cool. And do they have anything interesting or useful to say?

I don't know about everyone, but I do get joy out of creating most of the time.

Took a DNA test a few years back and today out of curiosity decided to learn more about my haplogroup and the particular mutation my DNA contains.

Apparently, my particular mutation is found in Ukrainian Jews. It is also common in the regions of Lithuania, Belarus and Poland with other significant populations in Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, Moldova, Estonia, Bulgaria, Romania and, of all places, Iraq! So I am of Eastern European extraction with some possible Jewish ancestry. Pretty cool stuff!

I always thought I looked different from the typical Anglo-Saxon population I grew up with, but never really knew why. Also, in light of this new information it makes complete sense why people tell me I look like Mila Kunis.

Just goes to show, you don't really know who you are.

Edit: Forgot a couple of countries.

Does it match up with what you know of your family heritage?
I've been wanting to take one of those tests, but then I've also read that some of those companies mess with the results, like putting in fake African ancestry just to upset racists. So, now I'm a little leery.
Also, you're better-looking than Mila Kunis.

Actually, I was really shocked because all my family are from Western Europe, but I read up on European history and apparently it was common for Eastern Europeans and Jews to immigrate to Western European countries, so it makes sense that my ethnicity would be Slavic/Jewish while coming from western countries.

And, thanks! That's actually quite flattering!

Not sure if they'd stoop that low.

Only surprise I found was that I had some Northern African according to my results. Not sure why they'd risk ruining their company by lying too me.
