  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Books do not belong in boxes! They belong on shelves where they can be seen and admired and where their owners can be commended for how 'well read' they are. Those books have been imprisoned for long enough.
This is why I collect books. It maintains my pretense of being smarter than I really am.

So I decided to try that Arby's BLT with the brown sugar bacon...and it was utterly disgusting.

I tried their fish sandwich one time, YUCK. That's why I stick to roast beef there.

This is why I'm reluctant to try any novelty sandwiches at restaurants. Why bother risking something I may not like? Their roast beef sandwiches are excellent, and I know I like them.

I usually get their brisket sandwiches since I love brisket. But I also love bacon, so what's not to like? Well, now I'm considering licking the toilet seat to get the taste of their food out of my mouth.

Haha, same situation for me - except when possible I sold my used textbooks. Sometimes I could get more than I paid for them if I was lucky. (Except the ones I really liked or thought might be useful in future.)
I treat some of my notes as a textbook. Because I had a really good teacher (from "two year college")and I typed my notes from his lectures because whenever I tried handwriting them my hand would cramp up and be unable to keep up with everything. I think I can probably find a lot of the main stuff in the actual textbooks but it is sometimes easier to look over notes instead. Now that I'm thinking about it.. I wonder if I printed out those notes or if they disappeared with all the missing data.

The answer is a simple one. They were boxed for so long because I've had to move twice since graduation. It's not how I wanted it or what I intended but it is what happened. I had intended to stay in the city I went to seminary in but the Lord had other plans. Thus the reason they were so long imprisoned. I've been living out of suit cases for the last three months alone. So finally being out of boxes is no small thing to me. You should free your books! If you really do not want them then take them to a bookshop willing to purchase used books.
I wish I could 'like' this several times. I know just what you mean... Opening your long-packed boxes of books is like Christmas!
It was like Christmas! Unfortunately, I discovered to my horror that some of my books are missing! I have been trying not to wig out about it though. They must be here somewhere! Either I will find them or I will have to purchase them again...but I am hoping I will find them.

nothing wrong with fiction
I have learned so many important things from fiction
1984 by Orwell helped me understand the influence of language, and the all encompassing desires of Totalitarians
Macbeth by Shakespeare was a beautiful portrait of a man ruined by sin and weakness, and the burden of a guilty conscience
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead by Stoppard showed me that you can be smart and funny, and helped me laugh at the ridiculous nature that life sometimes has
Something Wicked This Way Comes by Bradbury deals greatly with growing up, nostalgia, temptation, and friendship
(kind of funny, those last two book titles are quotes from Shakespeare plays)

I admitted to my 12th grade english teacher when she was signing my yearbook that I didn't like 1984. She was surprised.

I can't say I've read any of those other books you mentioned; but speaking of Shakespeare I should read Much Ado About Nothing. I found the movie adaptations I've seen humorous. I enjoyed reading Hamlet in high school; I cast my dolls as the different roles and it made it much easier for me to read the play. I couldn't read Romeo and Juliet when I tried.. perhaps its just the story that doesn't appeal to me.
I realized at some point that the Lion King was inspired by the Hamlet play. I watched Lion King last week and its making me want to read Hamlet again to compare.

you did not like 1984?????
how is that a thing? hahah sorry
like when I was a kid, I had a learning disability, it took me years to catch back up with the rest of my class when it came to reading
even when my reading abilities were technically on the same level as my peers, I did not read for fun and I was a slow reader
when I was 14 I read 1984 in two days, I could not put it down, and that book exploded my love of reading
the concepts were what I found most interesting, lol I have a soft spot for philosophy loosely put into novel form
I have probably read that book at least 5 times in my life

what about The Great Gatsby?
did you see the Baz Lurman movie? what did you think?
I thought it was ok, like some parts of it were over the top, but that is his style of movie making, so I was kinda already expecting that

and yes, Lion King is kinda loosely Hamlet
I like Hamlet better though.... lol, I dunno, not to be a stick in the mud, but The Lion King never really got to me, like it makes sense that the Hyenas would want to try and be able to hunt too

what are some books you do like?

Just noticed the Last Unicorn is on netflix. I haven't ever watched it so I'm gonna watch it now.

what are some books you do like?
I like adventure, fantasy, childrens literature, classics, biography (autobiography) etc. (I can send you a pic of my bookshelf later because I'm lazy right now.)
A couple favorites are Ella Enchanted, and Lord of the Rings.
I guess character development is important to me, however I can think of an exception. I really enjoyed much of A Series of Unfortunate Events which is different than anything I've read before. The character development and plot itself might not be so great on its own; but the narrator (essentially another or even the main character) makes it fun. Most things I've read in that format I found dull.

Well I'm off to watch that movie now.

It looks like I am missing some of my church history and theology books. My favorite book is missing as well, Spurgeon's Morning and Evening devotional. It must be found or it must be bought again. Of course if I did buy another copy the original would probably turn up.
