There was one hymn called "Stand up, Stand up for Jesus!" and the congregation was SITTING DOWN while singing it - which I thought was wrong so I STOOD UP and stayed standing up through all 4 verses
I'm so glad somebody else notices this sort of stuff.
In some ways, it seems that much of the songs' lyrical content is aspiration--what people wished they believed--more so than confessional.
The Psalms give voice to much which is unsingable today.
And when they do give voice they ask 1) where are You?, 2) You will come to aid of the weak.
Nowadays, such much that gets sung if it does give voice gets a similar but different 1 - 2 of, 1) where are You?, 2) I still believe.
To those who vanquish evil a crown of life shall be?
Sometimes it's not as simple as the evil to be vanquished is the evil in the outsider. Sometimes it's the evil in me that needs defeat and to me being a soldier of the cross means more than I once thought it might.
But I could be wrong. Maybe the Real Presence stuff is overstated. Hard for me to say.
