What's considered an appropriate penitential substitute if a US Catholic accepts the USCCB's indult for Friday abstention?

I don’t think I could ever be vegetarian. I love chicken too much, lol
All the better penance.

On the other hand, it can also become a source of spiritual pride.

Then again Matthew 3:8

So produce fruit that is consistent with repentance [demonstrating new behavior that proves a change of heart, and a conscious decision to turn away from sin];

Why not just abstain from meat on Friday all year?
I think I might try to get back into that habit. Admittedly, it's a lot easier as a single person vs in a family of four when meals have to consider everyone else.
Too bad it changed. I should pick up this practice.
I definitely found a lot of value in it. Even if it's just a small pause to pray and contemplate Christ's passion when we're deciding what to eat and remember we're excluding meat.

I have 5 children, and all are grown, and they still abstain from meat on every Friday. It's not really as hard as it seems. Yes, they complained when they were young, but it stuck

In the 1920s, an atheist, English ethnologist and social Anthropologist from Oxford University and Cambridge University decided to look at monogamy and civilization. He studied eighty primitive tribes and six known civilizations over 5000 years of human history. His results are published in his book Sex and Culture from 1934.

He found that monogamous cultures could build and grow and create space for people to flourish through art, music, architecture, and economics. When a society abandoned monogamy, particularly premarital chastity, it collapsed within three generations, with a generation defined as approximately 33 years.

He wrote that a society is free to choose to display growth in the above mentioned areas or enjoy sexual freedom. The evidence is that is cannot do both for more than one generation, and if that trend goes past one generation, the collapse is inevitable. He saw that as societies became prosperous and adopted liberal sexual mores, they lost cohesion and a sense of purpose. J.D. Unwin was an atheist. He sees societal trends, can you?

Carrie Gress, The End of Woman, How Smashing the Patriarchy has Destroyed Us, Regnery Publishing, Washington DC, 2023
pp 166-167

The “free love” movement began in the 1960s. If we take the “Summer of Love” as a starting point, that means the first generation was from 1967-2000. We are in the second generation which will go to 2033, and the United States will have collapsed by 2066.

The trend has held for the last 5000 years of time. Only a miracle can stop it. I am embarrassed and horrified that I bought into the liberal sexual revolution, I cohabitated and had premarital intercourse with my wife and two previous wives. I am not preaching holier than thou. This is serious.

It is only by a miracle of God’s grace that I have repented and maintained complete chastity for over 4 years. The trend does not look good for our nation

We need the intercession of Our Lady. We need to repent in dust and ashes. If you are not married and unchaste then you need to repent now. That means no masturbation, no porn, no extramarital intercourse, no fetishes. If you cannot do it, then I recommend confession frequently and reception of the Eucharist until you can gain spiritual strength. If you are not following church teaching in any area, stop it and repent.

God will shed His grace on you. I know He will, because He did it for me

A Friday penance that I would recommend for Catholic married couples is to refrain from sexual intercourse on Fridays

If you are unmarried and struggle with sexual sin, go to confession every Thursday and ask for grace to sexually fast every Friday, as you take the Eucharist at Mass. When you have achieved chastity, God will give you a new Friday penance to honor Him

If you are single and celibate then fast every Friday so that Mary can intercede and call all souls to chastity

Stop worrying about the little things in the Church. We get the leaders we deserve. We have bad leaders because we are sheep that have gone astray. The Novus Ordo confects the Eucharist and the liberal Bishops still administer the sacraments ex Opere Operato. Repent and pray for God’s blessing

Or do nothing and watch society burn by 2066. If Our Lady intervenes for the Lord’s Church, you may be left out unless you repent
Pray the Rosary everyday go to the Sacraments

Listen to holy music. My current favorite album is Woodstock Jesuit Singers Vol 1 from 1964. I like it because it’s ironically named and has some of the greatest Catholic Hymns ever sung IMO
I especially like Let all Mortal Flesh keep Silent

If we take the Lambeth Conference as a starting point, then we are in the third generation, and the United States will collapse by 2029, which will be 100 years since the last Fatima communication

Either way, the time is short, God calls all men everywhere to repent

That's definitely something I need to be mindful of. Thanks for the reminder!

God bless

It’s the start of society rebelling against chastity
In 1930, the Lambeth Conference removed restrictions on contraception and stopped teaching that it is intrinsically evil. Catholics almost followed them, but the Holy Spirit inspired Paul VI to stop them in 1968

There was a world wide rebellion against the Pope at that time, but it is still Catholic teaching that contraception is intrinsically evil, although it is reported that 70 -90% of Catholic couples practice contraception

The study showed that it was societies over the last 5000 years collapsed in three generations when the gave up on monogamy, particularly premarital chastity. The Catholic Church began to be built on Peter by Our Lord only 2000 years ago and the rebellion against Chastity began 94 years ago

We will see if the pattern holds, but it should bring fear of the Lord and His judgement and inspire us to repent, not just sit back and watch

Christ promised he will return and the gates of hell won't prevail. I trust in him.

Yes the Church will endure. There is no such promise to the United States. The Holy See is in Rome, but the Roman Empire still fell. The Church remains
