• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

No sugar on grits. I think there's an old law still on the books in Georgia regarding a minimum fine for putting sugar on grits.

Butter and salt and pepper if you want them plain.

My dd most often wants cheddar cheese mixed in hers.

I also like to mix scrambles eggs grits and cheese.

As a kid, that was on thing my mother could get me to eat. I was a very picky kid. I still love rice, but I have to watch eating it. That is why I eat more grits now.
All I would eat was freezee pops, kool-aid and cheez. ;)

As a kid I wouldn't have seen a problem with that:thumbsup: . If it was not rice I wanted it was grilled chesse and french fries. French fries was the one veggies I ate. If it was green, I did not eat it, my Mom even tried to but things in rice for me to eat, it did not work.:p

Why has no one answered the poor guy's first question? Oh well, I must be the only grit eating person who actually knows what a "grit" is. OK, it's a little hard to explain, but a grit is the tiny, little, hard, seed looking thing hiding at the base of the kernel on an ear of corn. It's not very big, so you may not even notice it's there unless you are looking for it.
The reason why we have grits is that chicken feed is crushed uncooked kernels of corn, but chickens are incapable of digesting the "seed" or "grit". When you buy corn seeds at the garden supply store they give you a "whole" uncooked kernel as a seed. The "whole kernel has the "grit" inside and that (not the kernel) is what makes the corn plant. So there.

By the way just as a note, the proper Southern style is salt, pepper, and butter (real butter). Also, Southern people NEVER cook instant grits. It's against our religion.

I am southern through & through - I love instant grits !!!! I like mine with BUTTER , salt & pepper. I don't like "watery" grits. If I eat them with a meal , I eat them w/butter,salt & pepper. If I eat them "as a meal" I add cheddar or hoop cheese. Down here they are served at the catfish house w/cheese --as a side dish. I don't like them w/fish !!!!! Below is another defition of grits.

1) What are grits?

Grits are made from the milling of corn kernels. The first step in the process is to clean the kernels; then, the grains are steamed for a short time to loosen the tough outer hull. The grain kernel is split, which removes the hull and germ, leaving the broken endosperm. Heavy steel rollers break up the endosperm into granules, which are separated by a screening process. The large-size granules are the grits; the smaller ones become cornmeal and corn flour.
