  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I can understand people who say that someone who kills, deserves to die. That of course leaves the question of why the person killed in the first place. Then someone is likely to claim that it is false justice and the the person who administered retribution deserves to die. Thus starts the vicious cycle...

So let's start at the beginning:

What would make you kill a person who had not already killed someone themselves?

Self defense or to protect somebody else. When faced with a force that can't be reasoned with the only way to stop it in some situations is thru an equal or greater force. Granted I'd love to find an intelligent solution that wouldn't have violence but I doubt a deranged person with a weapon would fall for the old "Hey! look at that!" while I got out of there or saved somebody.

Like MsAnne, I'm not entirely sure about self defense. I am simply not a violent person by nature, and I can only remember getting truly angry in cases where a seemingly innocent third party had been wronged. Still, I can conjecture that if my life were genuinely threatened, I would kill.

I do, however think that there are some crimes that, if witnessed, would drive me to kill. If I were to witness a rape, especially of someone who I especially feel inclined to defend, I'm almost certain that, without much contemplation at all, I would kill the offender. Similarly, there are some forms of cruelty that would almost certainly drive me kill if I were witness to them. A third, and in my opinion much more ambiguous, situation is basically the gross disregard of human dignity. In the massacre of wounded knee, for instance, it was reported that some of of the murderers disrespected dead women and children in ways that would most certainly get me in some trouble if I were to describe them here. Even though no person was actually in physical pain due to these abominable acts, I don't know what I would do if I were there, especially considering that the defilers were said to gloat over their tragic crimes.

This really is a sad question to answer.

In my profession as a peace officer it is my sworn duty to protect the innocent. Everyday I have to be mentally prepared to make the split second decision....shoot or don't shoot.
According to the penal code, the use of deadly force is lawful in order to prevent death or great bodily injury to another person, or to prevent an escape.
I'm not only authorized to use deadly forcre in these situations, I'm expected to do it. If I fail to do so when the situation warrants it I can be found negligent.

I'm not a violent person. But you do NOT threaten harm to my wife or my daughters. All I can think of to say to someone who'd ever do that would be "I hope you and Jesus have it all worked out" :) - quote from Bride - Hired Gun

If I saw them in danger I'd have no reserves whatsoever.

I might defend others, kill the person to stop them. That sort of thing. As far as something making me actually just "do it" I'd probably have two alternatives to manage it: One, I kill myself after killing others. Two, I kill so many people, I'm placed in a solitary room in a mental institution or federal prison. So as not to fear prison, being a complete psycho.

I've never fought anyone, so I can't say what would make me do such a thing. But, we've all got our limits, no one has managed to find mine yet, and for the safetly of most in the general vicinicity wearing white and not looking for stains, I'd say we'll be lucky for it not occuring.

Yeah. Although I believe in God and Jesus Christ as my saviour, if you break in my house you have to die! LOL...I've just heard too many horror stories of burglars suing the victims over small stuff. Getting hurt in their house, etc. All I need is for some would be thief in my home to say that a shot in the air caused him "emotional trauma". Nope. If you're in my house unauthorized, you're not going to be able to tell your side of the story.

Hi all!

Arikay summed it up pretty good:

If it was the only/final resort in self defense of myself or others.
Cant think of much else.

I do annual 3-4 week stints of reserve duty in the IDF. In 5 of the past 6 years I've been on patrol in the Jordan Valley. Our open-fire guidelines are very clear & pretty much jibe with what Arikay said.

Be well!

Remember in the first season of 24 when Nina tells Jack that the Coast Guard found Kim's body floating in the water?

Remember what Jack did when he heard this? Remember the raw emotion that we see in Jack?

...there ya go.
