Royals told: open archives on family ties to Nazi regime | The Guardian

The Sun’s decision to publish footage of the Queen at six or seven years old performing a Nazi salute, held in the royal archives and hitherto unavailable for public viewing, has triggered concerns that the palace has for years sought to suppress the release of damaging material confirming the links between leading royals and the Third Reich.

Unlike the National Archives, the royal archives, which are known to contain large volumes of correspondence between members of the royal family and Nazi politicians and aristocrats, are not compelled to release material on a regular basis. Now, as that relationship becomes the subject of global debate, historians and MPs have called for the archives to be opened up so that the correspondence can be put into context.

“The royal family can’t suppress their own history for ever,” said Karina Urbach of the Institute of Historical Research at the University of London. “This is censorship. Censorship is not a democratic value. They have to face their past. I’m coming from a country, Germany, where we all have to face our past.”

Edward VIII was an all round "fool" who prefered marriage to an American to the throne for example ;-). He was a suspected Nazi sympathizer. It seems he was a bad influence, the Queen mum was game for a laugh and QE2 was 8 i think. Bear in mind this was 1934 before all the warlike intentions and Jewish concentration camps came to light. Tv or rather Cinema was fresh on the scene and everyone was vulnerable to what they saw there. Plain and simple though the Queen is no Nazi!

This video should never have been released and I am not sure of the legality of it being out there.

Hitler was considered pretty amazing by quite a few people before his transgressions.

It isn't surprising. I mean, I am pretty sure even British clergy wrote about him saying he was defending the Christian idea of family. I'll have to find that.

I'm disgusted that the Sun would choose to release this film, as if it is in the public interest. The Sun itself is responsible for holding some pretty horrible views, so I'm not sure what moral highground they appear to be taking. Needless to say, I won't be buying any copies of their newspaper.

You can't help but feel that in a world where journalists risk their lives to report on brutal regimes and dangerous wars, this 80 year old film of the 6 year old Queen is petty.

He was Time Magazine's person of the year in 1938. I once read somewhere that the turn around he did for Germany was so dramatic that if WW2 didn't happen he would be a strong contender for person of the century.

Pretty much.

Everyone saw Hitler commission the Volkswagen Beetle, a cheap yet reliable mass-production car for the common man. No one realized that this was part of an effort to ensure that Volkswagen (among others) had the production capacity to manufacture combat vehicles.

Everyone saw Hitler commission a national highway system so that people could use their shiny new Beetles to traverse the country. No one realized that his new tanks and armored cars would be using it as well.

Everyone saw Hitler build up Lufthansa so that the nation would have its own air travel system. No one realized that he was doing it to train pilots and stockpile aircraft of all sizes.

Everyone saw Hitler commission a space program with the ultimate goal of going to the moon. No one realized that this "space program" was a cover for the V-2 program.

Everyone saw the Hitler Youth as a national program aimed at developing the nation's children. No one realized what it was developing them into...

German engineers developed an early version of magnetic recording tape. It was promptly used to circulate copies of Hitler's speeches.

German doctors discovered the link between smoking and various health issues. The propaganda department immediately cast smoking as a vice of the "lesser" classes in order to discourage actual Germans from smoking.

Et cetra.

And even during the war, the Nazis continued to innovate. The Third Reich gave the world the FA-223 Drache (the first mass-production helicopter) and the Me 262 (the world's first jet-powered fighter aircraft).

It boggles the mind to think about what Germany might have given the world had Hitler not intended everything he touched to be used for his evil ideas.

I would never admire Hitler, but i cannot overlook what contributions he helped oversee. If Hitler would have died in 1938 I can imagine "go getter" types would be quoting him and pointing out his example of overcoming adversity and leading people to greatness. an example that we all should follow....but he didn't and we saw how crazy he really was. he would most likely be the conservative movement's hero and not the villain. lol

Indeed. There's no denying he was an incredible leader. It's just tragic his motives and subsequent actions were so sinister.

ROTFL ... how easily some people are hoodwinked. The reason Time named Hitler person of the year was because he was a progressive socialist who was successfully implementing great progressive ideas building the grand Utopian paradise.

Nazi == National Socialism. The history books like to hide that FACT.

Let's be clear on conservative then. In general, American conservative equates with a liberty and freedom loving small government preference rather than the big-government displayed by the Nazis.

What type of conservative are you?

Once again. I am not talking about government policies. I am talking about the hard working attitude that Hitler loved to promote to the German people.

I know. I was making a joke about the mustache. You know... as a fashion statement.
