  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Zoroastrianism and Hinduism would be my pick. They are around about the same age as far as paleo-linguistics can tell. Scholars place Zarathushtra (Zoroaster in Greek) as living between 3300-1500 BCE.

It was during the time in Babylon that Judaism picked up concepts such as, life after death, heaven and hell, Satan and the coming of a Messiah, all from Zoroastrianism.

It depends on what is meant by "recorded".

If historical artifacts are included in "recorded", then Goddess Worship (an archaic form of paganism) probably is one of the oldest ones, dating back 20,000 ? or more years.

As far as religions still practiced today are concerned, Hinduism is the oldest one.

Judaism is old, but the "recordings" are probably no more than about 3500 or so years old.

We need to be careful not to dismiss anything just because it was not "recorded" (because writing may not have been invented then), and we need to remember that many "recordings" were of events and stories that were kept alive verbally for a very long time before they were written down.
