Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. -- 1 Cor 10:31

I would be surprised if wellness were not a consideration in a social group that claims to have the highest intentions for its members.

I have no problem with a church's encouraging wellness among its members although people may have different ideas about what that entails. I think it's great that the Adventist Church has through the years helped many people stop smoking, control their diabetes through diet, etc. On the other hand, I do have a problem with calling things sins when the Bible doesn't. For example, I personally don't drink any alcohol, and my opinion is that it's best not to because of the risks involved (of impaired judgment, intoxication, addiction, etc.). However, I do not believe that the Bible forbids all alcohol use. Therefore, I don't believe that such an issue should be made into church doctrine.

I respect that.

I've seen the gifts and gifted medical missionary from the SDA church used to restore the lives of some sick communities. These Christians are amazingly used by God in a powerful way to help and heal people through medicine and education.

They teach people about health and foods and they preach the gospel to them.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Kind of had to square drinking alcohol with the biblical injunction to love God with all your mind when the alcohol is killing the brain cells.

NIV - 1Ti 5:23 -Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.

"Deacons likewise must be men of dignity, not double-tongued, or addicted to much wine or fond of sordid gain." 1 Timothy 3:8

Is there a difference between being "addicted to much wine" and "consumes no wine at all?"

And when was the last time a doctor told you to chug booze for an upset stomach? More likely they are talking about grape juice. Note the key adjective "little."

This is a simple issue - no doctrine needed. We can help people live more healthfully.

We can? From where does such wisdom come and would somebody please tell the doctors? They keep changing their minds as to what is healthy and what isn't. ^_^

There are iterations and adjustments - but our collective understanding of health - from science - has grown tremendously. That's why we are living longer.

However, as you point out, understanding curing doesn't not always mean understanding healing.

Thanks Sophia, I have come to this position as well...

What If;
.....your pastor showed up during worship in speedos and started to teach on health?

My point is........If it's not in the bible, maybe we should teach it outside the sacred time and place devoted for worship and bible study.

What do you think?

I agree.

Though many may wish to deny it, there are many places within SDAism (and other groups as well) where the dividing line between "advise" and "doctrinal mandates" can become cloudy. If a behavior is not expressly prohibited in Scripture, then we are swapping opinions. I suppose it's OK to swap opinions, but let's be clear that such discussions should not be confused with "the divine" and "the sacred."
