Why should health be a church doctrine today? What texts are presented to teach about health?

Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. -- 1 Cor 10:31
I would be surprised if wellness were not a consideration in a social group that claims to have the highest intentions for its members.
I respect that.I have no problem with a church's encouraging wellness among its members although people may have different ideas about what that entails. I think it's great that the Adventist Church has through the years helped many people stop smoking, control their diabetes through diet, etc. On the other hand, I do have a problem with calling things sins when the Bible doesn't. For example, I personally don't drink any alcohol, and my opinion is that it's best not to because of the risks involved (of impaired judgment, intoxication, addiction, etc.). However, I do not believe that the Bible forbids all alcohol use. Therefore, I don't believe that such an issue should be made into church doctrine.
Kind of had to square drinking alcohol with the biblical injunction to love God with all your mind when the alcohol is killing the brain cells.However, I do not believe that the Bible forbids all alcohol use. Therefore, I don't believe that such an issue should be made into church doctrine.
NIV - 1Ti 5:23 -Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.Kind of had to square drinking alcohol with the biblical injunction to love God with all your mind when the alcohol is killing the brain cells.

And when was the last time a doctor told you to chug booze for an upset stomach? More likely they are talking about grape juice. Note the key adjective "little."NIV - 1Ti 5:23 -Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.

cheers mate"Deacons likewise must be men of dignity, not double-tongued, or addicted to much wine or fond of sordid gain." 1 Timothy 3:8
Is there a difference between being "addicted to much wine" and "consumes no wine at all?"

This is a simple issue - no doctrine needed. We can help people live more healthfully.
There are iterations and adjustments - but our collective understanding of health - from science - has grown tremendously. That's why we are living longer.We can? From where does such wisdom come and would somebody please tell the doctors? They keep changing their minds as to what is healthy and what isn't.

Thanks Sophia, I have come to this position as well...I have no problem with a church's encouraging wellness among its members although people may have different ideas about what that entails. What If;
.....your pastor showed up during worship in speedos and started to teach in health?
My point is........If it's not in the bible, maybe we should teach it outside the sacred and place time devoted to worship and bible study.
What do you think?
