  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have probably 30 or more clients now - so it's not like I need to develop a portfolio LOL
Depends on how much work you want. Showing off your work on your website is good advertisement. Once you do that you can advertise through google ad's, no need to be restricted to clients in your area. Advertising on google is pretty cheap, I may be setting up a web hosting company soon and plan on using google to advertise.

I don't need to pay for google advertising, I rate well without the cost - and from past experience, people really don't like dealing with people they can't meet face to face (for web design type services I mean - hosting would be a whole other ball game) - especially from another country!

All depends on talent level, complication of site, etc.

Professional companies are charging well over 2-3gs for in depth sites.

Basic html sites using front page or basic dreamweaver templates are ranging in the 800-1g range in Chicago area.

Depends what you're doing and what you think is an appropriate amount to charge. I think $800 is a bit over the top, really.

When my church upped and asked me to build them a site for their youth ministry, I let them know firstly that I was no good with Photoshop, but I could write webpages. So, the job of designing it went to my friend who happens to be a graphic designer by trade; he designed it, I coded it.

The only charges I have ever sent towards the church (they agreed to reimburse against any costs) were for the domain name itself and the hosting it runs on. I don't charge for coding websites as I'm not doing it commercially, just for my church at the moment (and possibly myself later).

Well, I'm a graphic artist / webdesigner, so take that into concideration as you read.

But for friends, I don't really charge much. Even for elaborate designs. For me, it becomes a portfolio peice, so I should do a good job on it. I can hammer out a good design in about 3 hours in photoshop, and coding it takes ~8 hours for a large site.

Basically, I'd charge like, 5$ an hour for a good friend. Maybe 10$ if the work is harder.

but I really enjoy this kind of stuff, so it's not really work for me. :D
