What think ye of the SBC convention, moderates vs conservatives?

I have a difficult time understanding exactly what the SBC could actually do in regard to a sexual abuse claim in a church that is a member other than kicking them out. Seems to me it's a criminal issue. I can see the reluctance in kicking out a church because of what one person in the congregation allegedly did. A criminal investigation proving guilt would be necessary. I'm not sure the SBC has the hammer some think.

The church needs to call the police. It is a criminal matter. And a database with convicted sex offenders who have worked in SBC churches would be helpful so they are not hired by another.

I was part of the SBC over 30 years. I left in 2014.

The division seems to be whether the SBC is to be a church focusing on teaching about Christ and the Gospel or should it be a religious GOP political action committee (PAC).
This most recent election staved off the latter for now. How long it will last isn't clear.

I didn't say "right wing is wrong". I said Stone and the Conservative Baptist Network is more right wing than the faction Littel is in. A number of sources refer to the Conservative Baptist Network as ultraright.


IMHO, making a statement that the churches need to follow local laws and establishing a database is not dictating to churches. It is odd that Stone, who says he is a sexual abuse survivor himself, is not more vocal about it.

As to why I think they are ultra - right, it is because they, themselves claim the SBC is going left and needs a 'Conservative resurgence".

In the election of the president of the SBC, Rev. Stone was seen as far more right.

My only complaint about the SBC at this point, since leaving back in 1990s, is that they have not dealt well with the sexual abuse issues in the church and I don't see where Rev. Stone and the CBN offer anything but what they are already doing.
Other than that, I think they are far more political that I think a church should be. The focus should be on sharing Christ, not who is president.

I agree with that. The SBC should provide an offenders list to those in the organization AND to the public. Those who target Churches should be identified once they are convicted. The SBC could also develop (if they have not already) a guideline and training to membership that helps deal with this matter. I think that some misunderstand the role of SBC and its authority at the Church level. Dealing with sexual abuse should be a matter between the local Church and law-enforcement. Seems that some are upset with the SBC's lack of authority.

I have not followed this closely. Most of the dispute seems to concern the issue of race. It appears that the vote for a new President was quite close. Is there a chance that the SBC could split within a few years, like the United Methodist Church may well do?

If needed, I hope so. Personally, I have no patience with those pushing the Critical Race Theory hustle.

I'm saddened that the split continues. I was in Paul Pressler's Sunday School class at First Baptist Houston and actually became a delegate to the Kansas City Convention which I believe was in 1980. The fracture was already well under way as the Universities led the way toward serving desires of men and not the will of GOD.

There was a temporary resurgence in faithfully pursuing God's will, but the march toward social and political agendas continues.

Though not a Baptist event, I was appalled at the Politicization of Promise Keepers in Dallas last month.It was the Gospel of political revenge rather than the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Change can only come from the inside out as Jesus changes out heart's desires. Trying to change from the outside in creates masks. These masks give way to abuses of all kinds including the worst of all, deception of our position in Christ.

There should be no left and no right, but we should find our calling as followers of Christ. A social gospel is a gospel of man. We follow the Gospel of Jesus.
