What Should You Do When You Get Offended?

Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offences will come
— Luke 17:1

Every so often, everyone has an opportunity to get offended. In fact, Jesus said, “It is impossible but that offences will come.” (Luke 17:1). The word “impossible” is the word anendektos, meaning something that is impossible, inadmissible, unallowable, or unthinkable. One scholar notes that it could be translated, “It is simply unthinkable that you would allow yourself to dream that you could live this life without an opportunity to become offended.”

But what is an offense? The word “offense” comes from the Greek word skandalon, from which we get the word scandal. This is a powerful picture that you must understand! The word skandalon originally described the small piece of wood that was used to keep the door of an animal trap propped open. A piece of food was placed inside the trap to lure the animal inside. When the animal entered the trap and accidentally bumped the skandalon, or the small piece of wood, the skandalon collapsed, causing the trap door to slam shut and the animal to be caught inside with no way to escape.

However, the New Testament also uses the word skandalon to refer to a stone or an obstacle that caused one to trip, to stumble, to lose his footing, to waver, to falter, and to fall down. In First Peter 2:8, the word skandalon is used to describe how unbelievers react to the Gospel when they don’t want to hear it or believe it. Peter said, “And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word.” Rather than accept the message and be saved, these people stumble when they hear the truth, tripping over the message that could set them free.

But in Luke 17:1, Jesus used the word skandalon to warn us about events that happen in life with the potential to trip us up. Sometimes Satan baits us with something — drawing us into a trap in which he knows we’ll become offended. When we bump into a moment of offense, the trap slams down shut — and like an animal that is trapped in a cage and can’t get out, we suddenly find ourselves caught in a miserable situation, trapped in detrimental and negative emotions!

This means Luke 17:1 could be translated:

“It is simply unthinkable that you would allow yourself to dream that you could live this life without an opportunity to
be lured into a situation that could potentially
snare you in the feelings of offense.”

If this is really what Jesus meant, we need to know the nature of the bait Satan uses to get to us. What is the “offense” the devil uses to trap most people?

An offense usually occurs when you see, hear, or experience a behavior that is so different from what you expected that it causes you to falter, totter, and wobble in your soul. In fact, you are so stunned by what you have observed or by a failed expectation that you lose your footing emotionally. Before you know it, you are dumbfounded and flabbergasted about something. Then your shock turns into disbelief; your disbelief into disappointment; and your disappointment into offense.

We’ve all experienced this kind of disappointment at some point in our lives. According to Jesus’ words in Luke 17:1, the opportunity to be offended comes to every one of us. As long as we live and breathe, we must combat this nuisance and refuse to allow it to have a place in our hearts and minds. Even worse, we’ve all been the source of offense at some point or another. It may not have been intentional on our part; in fact, we may not have even known we offended anyone until the person later came and informed us of what we did.

In light of all this, I’d like you to consider these questions:

 • Have you ever offended someone?
 • When you found out about the cause of offense, were you shocked?
 • When the news finally reached you that you had offended that person, were you surprised to hear how he or she perceived what you did or said?

Through the years, I’ve learned to do the best I can to avoid being a source of offense to anyone. At the same time, I try not to be too shocked if I find out that someone, somewhere, has gotten offended. Because people come from different backgrounds, wake up in bad moods, have a bad day at work, don’t physically feel well, and go through a whole host of other negative experiences in their lives, their interpretation of our actions and words may be very different from our original intention.

We can be almost 99-percent sure that someone along the way will misunderstand what we do or misinterpret something we say. Therefore, as Christians, we must: 1) do everything in our power to communicate correct messages to one another; and 2) do everything in our power to bring healing and restoration whenever misunderstanding and offense occurs between ourselves and someone else.

If you discover that you have been a source of offense to someone else, take the mature path and go ask that person to forgive you. And don’t get defensive, for that will only make the problem worse. It may even lead to a deeper conflict, so just say you are sorry and move on!

Do everything you can to bury that offense and destroy what the devil is trying to do between you. Make it your personal aim to help that other person overcome what he thinks you did or said. Sometimes it is more important to help the other person attain a position of peace than it is to prove who is right or wrong!

I took the advice in the other thread and found the ignore button. It is posts like this that convince me that it is not a lack of perception for how your words hit people but rather a lack of caring

Oh I care, just not for your human based, emotionally driven nonsense and underhanded criticism. ^_^

You slip is showing Bill! ^_^

Through the years, I’ve learned to do the best I can to avoid being a source of offense to anyone.

I dont really understand what you mean here... I guess my question is this: If you live a life in close communication and fellowship with God he transforms your mind as the word says and therefore you naturally will offend less people, yea? You are still going to offend people though because you are human. Especially if you speak the truth and the uncompromised Word of God. There will always be people who think contrary to the Word and for reasons unbeknown to them will be offended with you constantly.

Therefore, what is it that you do to try and not be an offense to anyone? I learned a long time ago that no matter how hard you try, you are not able to stop offending people therefore it really is out of your control. The only thing you can do is follow after God with your whole heart and not seek to be men pleasers but pleasers of God. Im not saying particularly that this is what was meant in your post, but I think it comes across that way.

Gal 1:10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.
2Ti 2:4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

Jam 3:1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.
Jam 3:2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

The fact is you will offend people unfortunately, but as it says in James 3:1 not everyone needs to be a teacher (nor in a leadership position )because we all offend people constantly... many times unconsciously. If your heart is not right and you are not called to be in that position you will muck people's lives up and will offend many... Sometimes even to the point of them falling away from God. But for those who do it consciously and who are in a position of authority, or who out of ignorance still do it because they are wrongfully in a position of authority, the condemnation is more severe. It is more severe because they have assumed a role that was not theirs and therefore they have the same level of responsibility and accountability to those people who become their victims just as if the right person were in the position they would have responsibility to watch over and keep them.

Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offences will come

One more thing I wanted to point out. The scripture used here for offense is not appropriately used. The first problem is that only the first part of the verse was used and you need to use atleast an entire verse not butcher it up so that it fits what you want to say. The underlined part in verse one is what was left out and it is what shapes the entire meaning of this verse. The second problem is that the world skandalon is not appropriately used either due to the fact that the poster left the last half of the scripture out and took away the meaning. Look at these verses:

Luk 17:1 Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offences will come: but woe unto him, through whom they come!
Luk 17:2 It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.

As stated in this post the word offences in verse one means:
skandalon

skan'-dal-on
A “scandal”; probably from a derivative of G2578; a trap stick (bent sapling), that is, snare (figuratively cause of displeasure or sin): - occasion to fall (of stumbling), offence, thing that offends, stumbling-block.

And then directly after that in verse 2 Jesus uses the word offend which is:
skandalizō
skan-dal-id'-zo
To “scandalize”; from G4625; to entrap, that is, trip up (figuratively stumble [transitively] or entice to sin, apostasy or displeasure): - (make to) offend.

What he is talking about here has absolutely nothing at all to do with the offenses that we make daily towards eachother as in 'I offended my friend because he misunderstood me' or 'My background is different from so and so and we fell out over it'. This verse has absolutely nothing to do with that at all. The kind of offense it is talking about here is when someone consciously comes against us as believers and causes us to stumble in any way, make, shape, or form. We are the sons of God and therefore his children and we are who he is talking about when he refers to his little ones. If you look in Matthew 18:6 and Mark 9:42 you will see other times Jesus made this reference and each time the word offense is SKANDALIZO.

However the verse you were looking for to use could have been:

Luk 17:3 Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him.

The word trespass here means:
hamartanō
ham-ar-tan'-o
Perhaps from G1 (as a negative particle) and the base of G3313; properly to miss the mark (and so not share in the prize), that is, (figuratively) to err, especially (morally) to sin: - for your faults, offend, sin, trespass.

But as you can plainly see the way Jesus told them to deal with this was to go to the offending person, rebuke them, and if he repents, forgive him. That doesn't really match up with the way you mentioned in this post on how to deal with offense.

-----------------

I dont mean to sound like I am attacking this post, I just think it is important to understand and realise that you have to be balanced when you read the word of God; especially if you share something as a teaching! You must rightly divide the Word with the Word. Don't leave things out that are rightfully there. If that means you dont understand something there, then study it out and figure it out.

What you tried to say here was nice and sounds good, but it is not at all the right scriptural backing. Study it out for yourself.. please! and see the truth behind it.

All the best.

Would you care to coment on the following two verses please. I really want to hear your opinion.

Matthew 24:10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.

James 3:2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

Wow. I must have missed when truth became sarcastic.

I guess you haven't listened to Copeland, Dollar or Duplantis when they get on a roll. They scold, get sarcadstic and sometimes even mock, but it's all done in the Spirit of Love.

The Holy Ghost can work through a number of different personalities and attitudes, even yours and mine.

Matthew 24:10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.

James 3:2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

Sure, but for the fact that its so late and I have to get up for class in the morning I will only comment on James 3:2 now and will comment on the other tomorrow.

Here the word offend is:
ptaiō
ptah'-yo
A form of G4098; to trip, that is, (figuratively) to err, sin, fail (of salvation): - fall, offend, stumble.

G4098 in the strongs is :
piptō petō
pip'-to, pet'-o
The first is a reduplicated and contracted form of the second (which occurs only as an alternate in certain tenses); probably akin to G4072 through the idea of alighting; to fall (literally of figuratively): - fail, fall (down), light on.

In James one we see that he is addressing the fact that not everyone needs to be teachers because they are held accountable for what they teach and if they cause stumbling blocks because their teaching or offences then they are held more accountable for it. He then goes on to tell in verse 2 the fact that we are simply men and whether we like it or not we err and miss the mark concerning our words. If you don't at all then you are a perfect or complete man and are able to completely control your body and the things that come natural for it to do.

Another place this word is found is 2 Peter 1:10:

Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling (invitation) and election (divine selection) sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:

2Pe 1:11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. The word fall here is ptaio. He is saying that when you realise and secure your salvation and the fact that God has called you to himself you will not err or fall but will enter into the everlasting Kingdom with Jesus.

The way this word is used here it means to sin, fall, or fail concerning salvation. We may sin and fall concerning the things we say to one another and it is a given that we will, but we will never fail concerning our salvation nor can we sin spiritualy anymore because we are the Righteousness of God through Christ Jesus (2 Cor 5:21).

Jam 3:13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

The whole chapter is dealing with the tongue yea? Here we can see that a wise man shows his wisdom by his conversation (behaviour) using meekness (humility) of wisdom (or humbly using wisdeom in conversation).

Jam 3:17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
Jam 3:18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

This is what we need to get our tongues to start doing. The question is are we willing to draw ourselves away from this:

Jam 3:14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.
Jam 3:15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
Jam 3:16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

... to get the righteousness that is in our spirit to work outward in every part of our life. Especially the tongue!

I hope this is condusive. I have not had proper time to look at it and it is near 4am here so I am not in my best state of mind. I must study this out a bit more though because there is a lot in it. I am curious as to what you think about this verse and what you see in the Word. Please tell me as I am curious as well :D.

I listen to them daily, sir, and they have never sounded hateful or used sarcasim as a weapon to bludgen someone. Check your feelings on that, better yet check your spirit.........

Emm.. I beg to differ but they are most definitely sarcastic when they deal with issues. As Godown said they do it in a spirit of love and Duplantis especially uses sarcasm in his messages and tells you exactly how things are. Sarcasm is not evil nor is it hateful. Where you got that I have no idea. The word hateful was never used. When one knows how to use sarcasm properly it is a wonderful tool.

You have hurt my feelings already. Please don't be mean to me.

I never used the word hateful, weapon and blugeon are your terms of choice and I'll thank you to use them sparingly.

Copeland nakes fun of people all of the tiem. Creflo and Jesse make fun of his own wife and daughter. I guess you missed this.
