Depends what you mean by "challenges". If you're talking about a grade school "I'll see you on the playground" challenge, then I would just ignore it.

If you're talking about an attack where you're forced to defend yourself, then it depends on the attack. If it's life threatening, then shoot him.

If it's not, then just beat the tar out of him.

What if the person is a foot taller and 100 lbs more? Unless you're a trained fighter you're not going to have much of a chance.

When I was 12 years old, I was with my mother and grandmother in the Walmart parking lot when a grown man walked up to us and spat on my grandma while saying "I hate you F***ing N*****s". Yes, it was exactly that random and out of the blue.

Despite that man being a full grown man who outweighed me by an easy 100 pounds I started towards him when both my mom and grandma held me back saying, "No baby, it's okay". I obviously stood no chance but it didn't matter to me, I wanted to kill him and if I died in the process so be it.

Contrast that with what happened to me the other month. I'm standing in line at a burger joint and this young hothead 20-something bumps into me rudely while cutting in line and looks me in the face and says, "What, what you gonna do?"

Now, I had two inches and 75 lbs on this kid and unknown to him, I've spent my entire teen and young adult life boxing and doing martial arts. I could have easily put this kid in the hospital. But I'm not going to hurt some hotheaded young punk over my place in line. So, I just motioned with my hand, "go right ahead". He turns around and says, "That's what I thought". I just rolled my eyes and let it go.

There are circumstances in which fighting to resolve a conflict is legitimate and there are times when it is just not worth it.

Someone calls me a name, big deal, whatever.
Someone calls my mom a name and I will rip your head off and play basketball with it.

I'm glad your relatives held you back. Fighting would of made you look like an animal and would of just increased his racism. The only lesson he would of learned is to use a weapon next time. The only time a Christian should fight is if there is no other option. Like if your stuck in an elevator with someone. However; there is a valid argument that a thug should be met with lethal force, so they don't hurt some innocent person in the future.

If the situation necessitates a fight for your actual survival, then you fight your damnedest. If you have the choice to walk away, then you do. That's not being cowardly or weak; it can actually take more emotional strength to force yourself to maintain your calm and to walk away when every part of you longs to fight, to win, to prove your point, to exact your revenge. It's showing self-discipline and integrity. Rarely is a fight worth the potential legal, physical, psychological, and social consequences.

He told Peter to put His sword back. Now, am I going to have to explain to you why that passage is not an example of Jesus prohibiting self defense?

Incidentally, the sword Peter used was most likely the one Jesus commanded him to buy in Luke 22:36.

That changes the original question a bit doesn't it?

Maybe you should give some more details about the circumstances surrounding this "challenge"...it would probably lead to better advice.

After reading the rest of the replies, I'd ignore the posters who advised you to shoot him.

It depends.... do you think you can win.... are you justified to fight... and do you want to fight?

I say.... yeah. I never look for a fight. So if I find myself fighting.... it's probably in self defense.

BTW.... people don't challenge you to a fight. They don't say.... hey.... we're fighting. They simply hit you. If they scream, holler, and invade your personal space.... you better fight. You don't know if they are trying to intimidate you or coming to attack you. So you better play it safe and protect yourself. And the best defense.... is a good offense. If they don't expect you to attack.... that's when you should attack.

Does god want you to fight? Probably in self defense. But god would not like it if you looked for trouble. It's not good for you. It doesn't help spread the word. And overall you are suppose to be kind to people.

Greatly depends.

If my life or someone else's life is in danger at that moment, I might fight. I can't fight like a normal person, so I'm not sure how that would work out exactly. I can't throw punches, but I can bite pretty hard

I'm a 30 something wife and mom, and I've seen it all, so if someone said "Come on, put your dukes up!" I'd probably look at them for a moment and then bust out laughing.

Honestly, it depends largely on the situation and the individual people involved. So I can't really give an answer without a specific example.

Walking away is always the right option if you have the option.

I don't know much about fights though. I've only been punched once for no real reason, and I apologized automatically which confused him enough to defuse the situation.
