  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What should we be doing daily? Was does a 24 hour day look like for a true born again believer?

We talk about being Christ- like, witnessing, giving up idols, and giving up sin, etc.

What does a 24 hour day look like for a true believer? Thoughts? How does one stay out of the world when we are in this world?
"As thou takest thy seat at table, pray. As thou liftest the loaf, offer thanks to the Giver. When thou sustainest thy bodily weakness with wine, remember Him Who supplies thee with this gift, to make thy heart glad and to comfort thy infirmity. Has thy need for taking food passed away? Let not the thought of thy Benefactor pass away too. As thou art putting on thy tunic, thank the Giver of it. As thou wrappest thy cloak about thee, feel yet greater love to God, Who alike in summer and in winter has given us coverings convenient for us, at once to preserve our life, and to cover what is unseemly. Is the day done? Give thanks to Him Who has given us the sun for our daily work, and has provided for us a fire to light up the night, and to serve the rest of the needs of life. Let night give the other occasion of prayer. When thou lookest up to heaven and gazest at the beauty of the stars, pray to the Lord of the visible world; pray to God the Arch-artificer of the universe, Who in wisdom hath made them all. When thou seest all nature sunk in sleep, then again worship Him Who gives us even against our wills release from the continuous strain of toil, and by a short refreshment restores us once again to the vigour of our strength. Let not night herself be all, as it were, the special and peculiar property of sleep. Let not half thy life be useless through the senselessness of slumber. Divide the time of night between sleep and prayer. Nay, let thy slumbers be themselves experiences in piety; for it is only natural that our sleeping dreams should be for the most part echoes of the anxieties of the day. As have been our conduct and pursuits, so will inevitably be our dreams. Thus wilt thought pray without ceasing; if thought prayest not only in words, but unitest thyself to God through all the course of life and so thy life be made one ceaseless and uninterrupted prayer.”

Hi ml5363, one important part of doing that is remembering who we are/Who we serve by studying the word of God daily and renewing our minds (if you choose to "treasure" God's word in your heart by memorizing important verses and passages from it, renewing of your mind can be more of a moment by moment thing instead :)).

Romans 12
2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

Here's a little more of what the Bible has to say.

Deuteronomy 11
18 You shall therefore impress these words of mine on your heart and on your soul; and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontals on your forehead.
19 You shall teach them to your sons, talking of them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road and when you lie down and when you rise up.
20 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates,
21 so that your days and the days of your sons may be multiplied on the land which the LORD swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens remain above the earth.

Joshua 1
8 “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.

Psalms 1
1 How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,
Nor stand in the path of sinners,
Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
3 He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water,
Which yields its fruit in its season
And its leaf does not wither;
And in whatever he does, he prospers.

2 Timothy 3
16 All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;
17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

--David
Psalms 119:9,11
How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Thy word. Thy word I have treasured in my heart that I may not sin against Thee.

The is a 30 minute daily broadcast (radio and online) by Dr. R. C. Sproul (and other teachers) called Renewing Your Mind that can be helpful as well. Interestingly, today's broadcast is called, "The Word of God in Spiritual Growth" :)

How does one stay out of the world when we are in this world?
Hi again ml5363, stepping out of this world and joining together with our fellow "aliens" (e.g. 1 Peter 2:11) each week is important to do too (as another, wonderful way of reminding us who we are/Who we serve). That's one of the big reasons that we go to church, go to Bible studies and other small group fellowships (and to a somewhat lesser degree, come to a place like this one :)).

When we are away from church and our brothers and sisters in Christ serving others in this world, we need to try to (as Brother Lawrence put it in the title of his important little book) learn to practice the presence of God in all that we do (which includes our times of rest).

--David
p.s. - I believe the Lord says something very interesting about "witnessing" in the following verse that may be worth considering in regard to this topic too.

Isaiah 43
10 "You are My witnesses,” declares the LORD,
“And My servant whom I have chosen,
In order that you may know and believe Me,
And understand that I am He.
Before Me there was no God formed,
And there will be none after Me."

Not to long ago I was wondering the same thing because people say live daily for the Lord and statements like that. I would like to know how that is done. Do they literally mean 16 hours a day you are in and around Jesus? How do you honor him daily?

Hi ilovejcsog, one of the ways that we honor God is by believing and trusting Him, by taking Him at His word (specifically because it is His word).

We also please and glorify Him by continually growing in the knowledge and understanding of His word, and by obeying it, of course (as well His specific will for our lives) in all the daily circumstances that we face. We also glorify Him though others when we act as light in their lives for God and become a blessing to them as a result (and they glorify 'Him' because of it .. Matthew 5:16 :)).

Brother Lawrence's little book (that I mentioned above) is a very worthwhile read in regards to this topic (The Practice of the Presence of God), as is Dr. J. I. Packer's book called, Knowing God.
