After doing my tree for years now, I have finally struck pay dirt and am in contact with a living relation on my mum's side who is still in the UK.
My great grandmother was this person's 3x great Aunt.
What is my relationship to them?
Is there a formula that is able to be applied to make it easy to see what relationships are etc. Thanks for any help I/we can get on this question...I know how to find the bodies, it's just a problem defining the 'off-shoots' from the main branches! ;)
If anyone wants to PMre this, that's fine though I am sure I am not the only one who would benefit from some expert advice on this type of thing...or am I the only dummy here??

Fortunately the program I use, Brothers Keeper, has a built in relationship computer. Off hand I'd say you're a n'th cousin several times removed. There may be an online freeware relationship computer.
Thanks for that

if i read this corectly, the relationship would be that of a second cousin twice removed, since the ancestor you both have in common would be 4 generations away from you :(your ggmother)
(common ancestor (1),
daughter,(2)
grand daughter(3),
great grand daughter(4)

and 5 generations from her: (her 3 x's great aunt)
(ancestor (1),
the sister to your ancestor's daughter(2)
,the neice,(3)
the grand niece,(4)
the great grand niece(5)
second great grand niece (6)

but if like you, she has only 4 generations, then the relationship between you would be that of second cousins.
