Here's a link to the Wikipedia page for Utilitarianism. This is the first time I've ever heard of Utilitarianism so I need to do my own research into it.

My top two were 90% Existentialism, 80% Hedonism. Not entirely inaccurate, but I reject the quiz on the basis that it rests upon simple answers to questions that don't have, and could not possibly have, simple answers.

For example, my classification as a Hedonist presumably speaks to my philosophy that as humans, we have a unique opportunity to explore the human condition and experience, and that we should each do so in whatever ways seem best to us -- whether that be pleasure or pain, comfort or hardship, relaxation or activity (but that we should never forget the effects of our own actions on the ability of others to experience the human condition). Hardly a philosophy that can be easily described as "hedonism," but because the quiz demands simple answers to complex questions, that's what it came out to be.

I follow an eclectic mix of various philosophies, but I'm most strongly influenced by Plato and Pythagoras (in their emphasis on mathematical truth), Aristotle and Aquinas (in the formulation of virtue and vice, and somewhat on Aquinas's account of the soul), and Kant (in his description of duty and why we must follow it) among others. In particular I've been developing a stronger and stronger aversion to the idea that happiness and the good should be equating with pleasure. So let's see how well the test reflects that:

Kantianism

85% Divine Command

70% Existentialism

65% Justice (Fairness)

65% Utilitarianism

30% Strong Egoism

30% Nihilism

20% Apathy

10% Hedonism

5%
I note in particular that Virtue theory is completely absent from the list, which seems somewhat strange.

70% hedonism

To the extent that I know anything about these philosophies, I guess there is something to it.

"Your life is guided by the concept of Existentialism: You choose the meaning and purpose of your life."

Man is condemned to be free; because once thrown into the world, he is responsible for everything he does
It is up to you to give [life] a meaning.
--Jean-Paul Sartre

It is man's natural sickness to believe that he possesses the Truth.
--Blaise Pascal

From wikipedia:
Existentialism
is a philosophical movement that views human existence as having a set of underlying themes and characteristics, such as anxiety, dread, freedom, awareness of death, and consciousness of existing, that are primary and that cannot be reduced to or explained by a natural-scientific approach or any approach that attempts to detach itself from or rise above these underlying themes. It conceives of Being itself as something that can only be understood through and in relation to these basic characteristics of human existence. For existentialism, human beings can be understood only from the inside, in terms of their lived and experienced reality and dilemmas, not from the outside, in terms of a biological, psychological, or other scientific theory of human nature. It emphasizes action, freedom, and decision as fundamental to human existence and is fundamentally opposed to the rationalist tradition and to positivism. That is, it argues against definitions of human beings either as primarily rational, knowing beings who relate to reality primarily as an object of knowledge or whose action can or ought to be regulated by rational principles, or as beings who can be defined in terms of their behavior as it looks to or is studied by others. More generally it rejects all of the Western rationalist definitions of Being in terms of a rational principle or essence or as the most general feature that all existing things share in common. Existentialism tends to view human beings as subjects in an indifferent, often ambiguous, and "absurd" universe in which meaning is not provided by either the natural order or God but rather can be created, however provisionally and unstably, by human beings' actions and interpretations.

--Well some of it I agree with 100%, some of it isn't clear to me, and I usually find the ideas expressed interesting and true in a sense, yet going in the wrong direction...
I am also reminded to what extent I get tired of the pessimism that is often expressed by existentialists.

Sheesh, everybody's an existentialist nowadays. And so am I, apparently:

Existentialism 70%
Utilitarianism 60%
Hedonism 60%
Kantianism 60%
Justice (Fairness) 35%
Strong Egoism 30%
Nihilism 25%

Divine Command 0%

Actually, I'd agree that existentialism is probably the philosophy I follow - it just isn't one I read much. Also, I've never heard of a philosophy of justice or a philosophy of apathy (unless they mean stoicism?).

Were my top three. Assumably, by nihilism they mean that I see no inheirent meaning in existence (outside of what meaning we give to it), and not that I believe nothing exists. A closer phrase I would use is a 'nothing sacred' philosophy. Other than that, the test was suprisingly accurate, even though I had trouble applying all of those beliefs to a simple scale like that. I am apathetic but also try to apply an aldous huxley-esque ascetic utilitarianism to my life- basically, what will lead me and others closer to the truth (whether or not such a thing is truly attainable is of less importance) is what we should do. You would think that utilitarianism and apathetic-ism would clash but I actually find that it works out pretty well.

Weird... I didn't expect that I'd tie for Existentialism and Hedonism.

Hedonism 80%
Utilitarianism 70%
Strong Egoism 65%

Apathy 35%

Divine Command 5%

I'd be curious to see how many other philosophies the quiz author might be able to come up with. Cynicism, Stoicism, Epicureanism... heh, them ancient Greeks could add plenty...

Fun quiz, tho'.

I already know which philosophy I follow, but let's see how the quiz rates me. I'm betting that I'm going to have a hundred quibbles about the questions.

Here goes...

[takes quiz]

As I predicted, I hate the wording of the questions. The results aren't too bad, though.

For what it is worth:

You scored as Strong Egoism.

Your life is very much guided by the concept of Egoism: You work primarily to promote your own interests.

I swear by my life, and my love of it, that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine.

I am not primarily an advocate of capitalism, but of egoism; and I am not primarily an advocate of egoism, but of reason. If one recognizes the supremacy of reason and applies it consistently, all the rest follows.
