That's not true about France, at all. The water there is not bad; they drink because it is customary and alcoholism is more than 5 times lower than in America.
In 1 Timothy Paul recommends wine for health reasons, just as doctors do today.

I honestly didn't know that. I've always heard that you don't drink the water in Europe, and specifically in Germany and France.

And the reason that alcoholism is so much lower (or a BIG part of the reason) is because they are taught from a young age how to responsibly handle it. Here it's taboo, it's evil, and then our kids go off to college and get blasted every night because they generally come from homes that either A. abused alcohol themselves, or B. were puritans who only taught that it was evil.

Wine, alcohol is like any of God's other gifts to us, from food to sex to anything ... taken responsibly, in moderation, withing the parameters that God gave us they are great blessings and gifts. Taken in abundance they are sinful and bring pain and damage and even death.
