  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi all.
What actually makes us a Christian?
Because it's not just to believe only as it says in James 2v19.... You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!

Is it to follow Jesus? As i know that includes trust and obedience in Jesus but we fail at some point with these.

Can i have help and understanding in this.

It's God who makes us Christian, but beyond that it's belief in and following Jesus. It's a reconciled relationship with God. It's LIFE. It's everything.

Jesus. Jesus actually made me a Christian. I was saved by grace through faith and that was a gift from God and not of myself.

James was writing as a Christian to Christians about Christians. To have parity you'd need to be asking "What makes someone who is already a Christian a Christian?" and not "What makes someone who has never been a Christian a Christian?" To answer the second question you're going to have to find example of atheists and those are far and few in the Bible.
Is it to follow Jesus? As i know that includes trust and obedience in Jesus but we fail at some point with these. Can i have help and understanding in this.
Well the word "Christian" literally means "little christs" or "little anointed ones," so, yeah, being a Christian does entail trusting and following Jesus and obeying his commands. I see you've mentioned, "...but we fail at some point..." Why is that relevant to your understanding?

Hi, Princess.

It IS by Faith, which is more than mere belief. And if you have that Faith, you will necessarily seek to live as Christ taught. If you did not even try, you obviously wouldn't have Faith in him.

However, this doesn't mean that we are saved by what we do, by our charitable deeds. It's just that our Faith obliges us to try to live a new life. If we fall--which we will at times--we can rise and start again. Faith does not cease to be the active factor in our salvation once we have had a 'born again' experience or 'accept Christ as Lord and Savior,' however we choose to word that.

Failing in trusting in Him and obedient to him as i say i trust in Him but action is different. And sometimes i feel if i fail him then that doesn't make me a christian.
Only God can help me and hopefully i will grow more in Him each day.

Good question. It simply means we act right as a general rule and when we fail, we ask forgiveness, repent (be sorry and stop doing that thing). If we sincerely try, just as a good parent does with their child, God is more than happy to forgive us our shortcomings because he said just that right here:

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all
unrighteousness.

IOW, as long as we make that sincere effort, we will be forgiven our sins, and we will be counted as pure by God because we were completely forgiven.

Proclaiming Christ without compromise.
This sounds easy, but its not so in a increasingly secularized world.
Christos kyros required blood in the past, and it sure will in the end times.

As it is, our days claim more martyrs than it has done ever since the time of the roman persecutions!
In Africa and Asia christians are being persecuted without ease.

Without compromise means that we need to preach Christ in his fullness. We need to be against gender ideology, as it realters the godgiven nature of man and women.

"He created them man, and women".

We need to stand up against homosexuality as its indeed a perversion of the natural godgiven bonds of husband and wife.
St. Paul touches the subject more than once.

We need to preach, and not proselytize. We need to preach Christ to the nations by our tongue aswell as our behavior.

We need to resist euthanasia and abortion. God is the solemn judge of our lives. That goes for its lengths and its struggles.
Any struggles or distress needs to be embraced and sanctified, not abondoned.

All of this needs to be done in the unity of the Holy Spirit. This means that we need to radiate the love of Christ in our everyday encounters.

Christ judged sins, but loved the sinner. This is our model. We need to strive to follow Christ in our words and our deeds.

Finally and this is the summing up of the above, we need to resist the temptation of adapting to the ideological winds of our time.

"A church that marries the ideological fashion of a certain time, becomes a widow in the next" - Pope Benedict XVI

The stages that are involved in becoming a genuine Christian are these:
1. Accept that you are a hopeless sinner, deserving of hell, and there is nothing of ourselves that we can do about it.
2. Believe that Jesus died on the cross to take the penalty for your sinfulness, and rose from the dead to give you eternal life.
3. Receive Jesus Christ as your saviour and Lord and commit your life and your future to Him.
At this stage you can believe the Scripture:
"By grace you are saved through faith, and not of yourself; it is the gift of God; not of works lest anyone should boast in them."
4. Then you start living the Christian life, avoiding the works of the flesh as listed in Galatians 5, and seeking to conduct yourself through the fruit of the Spirit as also listed in that chapter, depending on the indwelling Holy Spirit to guide and assist you. Living the Christian life does not save you, because only a person who is converted to Christ and thereby saved can live the Christian life. It is more of a testimony to the world around us that Christ can saved to the uttermost those who believe and trust in Him.

Technically our salvation is by faith in Christ alone. Yet we are admonished to not use that fact to indulge in sin, but rather to serve one another.

Gal 5:13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.

The bible is clear however that as Christians we should not live any longer in the flesh (indulging in sin), but rather let the Holy Spirit fill and guide us. As we are filled with the Spirit we will not give in to the desires of the flesh.

But the technicality is when we see Jesus in heaven, he will not be pointing out our failures, but rather acknowledge our faith in Him. Which is a gift from God.

But as the bible says:

Gal 2:17 But if, while we sought to be justified in Christ, we ourselves also were found sinners, is Christ a minister of sin? God forbid.

1Pe 4:2 That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.

Rom 6:15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.

Yet it is possible to loose your faith, if you desire sin more than God.

2Th 2:11-12 And for this cause God sendeth them a working of error, that they should believe a lie: that they all might be judged who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

God blinds the will full sinner, but give grace to the humble.

We are saved by grace, not works, yet we should strive to enter the narrow gate, and add virtue to our lives.

2Pe 1:5-8 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

As you can see from the vast majority of responses in this thread people tend to prefer the bare minimum. This results in drifting with the spirit of the time.
Beware this is a very dangerous path.

I believe my post reflects the safest way to stay in union with Christ. Compromises is by far the most effective tool in Satans toolbox.

Just reflect on the reasons so many christians was martyred in the first 3 centuries of christianity. It was solemnly due to the fact that they refused to be bound by the spirit of their day.

Kristos kyros... Christ is our Lord, not Caesar! We confess the kingdom of heaven at all cost. Its not right to obey man instead of God.

Can you name a completely obedient Christian in the Bible? I can't.

Peter acted hypocritically, acting one way with Gentile converts and another way with Jewish converts and Paul corrected him. Paul likewise struggled and eloquently described his angst in Romans 7. Furthermore, God saw fit to let Paul include his personal opinions among the inspired letters and his opinions sometimes conflicted with God's word. Paul wished all to be single but that flies directly into conflict with the first command God ever uttered to humanity: "Be fruitful and multiply, subdue the earth and rule over it." Surely Paul knew better. The congregations in Corinth and Ephesus were a mess. One convert acted so reprehensibly that he had sex with his step-mother and the congregation did nothing about it! Paul treats these messy people as if they are members of the same body as his own, the body of Christ.

So, Princess, if you're not having sex with step-dad you're doing better than some ;).

2 Peter 1:3-9
"His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins."

According to Peter you have everything you need for Godly living and you, PrincessofGod18, can participate in the divine nature. You gotta add a few things to mix, like faith and goodness and a little affection for others but you have everything you need to live a Godly life. Peter says we may get nearsighted and lose focus because of one single simple problem:

We've been made clean .

What do you do with the new sins? Confess 'em. God has an inexhaustible reservoir of forgiveness to dole out just for you. You don't have to share any of it, not even with me and I'm pretty sure I can give Paul a run for that title of "chief among sinners."

You, Princess, are a daughter of The Most High God. You are not your own; you are His. He bought you with the shed blood of His Son and then He adopted you, made you royalty, and gave you an inheritance the angels would die for, but that is not their privilege. It's yours. A gift from your heavenly Father. You're a daughter of The Most High God.

Act like it :D.

And when you fall and mess up that beautiful white garment in which you're clothed remember the blood washes out all that mess.
