What makes some music great?

What is it about some songs that is just good? Is it the melody, the harmonies, the background, the instruments? Why do some people just have a knack for writing great music? Take Paul McCartney for example. My favorite song from yellow submarine "Eleanor Rigby". Why is it that I could listen to that song for hours and never get tired of it?

What makes some music okay, but some music fantastic?

It just depends on the individual.

Maybe there's something about Eleanor Rigby that speaks to you? Maybe something in the music that says "I like this" or something in the lyrics?

I've never really been a fan of the song. I think it has to do with the music and nothing with the lyrics. It has to do with preferences developing over time.

For that matter what makes some songs give people the chills? I thought it was just an expression 'till I started to notice that myself. For example why does this song give me goosebumps everytime I hear it (especially the choir)?

Music, like most art, is difficult to explain. So much of it is personal and emotional for us and there are so many songs that I love. I could spend countless words telling someone about a song I like but ultimately they have to listen to it and decide for themselves. Everyone's different and just because I love something doesn't mean everyone else will and vice versa.

This is my favorite song of all-time. It gives me chills every time.
