I think the things from that film are scarab beetles of some sort.

Whilst they are loosely based upon scarab beetles the manner the movies depicted them eating live humans is mostly fictional. I imagine they were selected mostly because scarab beetles were held in high esteem by the ancient Egyptians but i'm not aware of a family that actively targets human sized prey, at least not whilst they're alive.
