Yes! I believe that a church should reach out to its local community. However, the local communal model is being eroded more and more I believe as people become more mobile and globally-inclined.

My current church is in Hong Kong - and there are two different types of churches regardless of what denomination. One is the International church which caters primarily to the ex-pats who come here to teach or as missionaries or who have studied overseas. Then there is the local church.

The international ones as you can imagine have little outreach to the local community. The local churches, though they reach out to the local community are generally cantonese speaking. So if you speak english and want to reach out locally you're going to have it hard in both cases.

So I find myself frustrated here. People are rather mobile here anyway. Jesus went to the people where they were - he went to weddings, to people's houses, etc. he was a community guy.

So I agree with you wholeheartedly. :D

um, mobile uh? in Australia, it's rather hard, my church is situated way out of the city, somewhere beside a park and right on a busy road with just houses around. it's like.. in the middle of nowhere, for people who live.. in the middle of nowhere, away from the city.

maybe actually going out and doing things together would do it, like joining mission trips together, and going out and join some community events?

I live in a small town, and for a long time was cynical about the residents here being "all for one, one for #1". But the amazing amount of love and support I and my family received after our tragedy in June was refreshing and heartening. I saw an outpouring of love that spanned denomination, belief, class structure and race. I had lost most of my faith in people and their true caring for their fellow man. Now I know it is there, just not always jumping around saying "look at me".
