  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I speak fluently Filipino, English. A little of Spanish. Random words in Japanese, Mandarin and our country's dialect(s): Visayan and Tagalog. =)

Cool :D I didn't realize we had more linguists here, I thought the resident Linguists was AFJ; wherever she is these days...

I will be jealous when you tell me you know Russian, Armenian, Arabic, and Hebrew.

Shalom and da svedonya.
I no noze those wurds! :(

But seriously, I know some spanish but I'm not great at speaking it. I can understand most if it though...if you don't speak it too fast. And then I know a few words in Italian, French, and Japanese, but not enough to say I know the languages. :p
Ooh, I can speak cat! Now be jealous!

Haha, I barely know English let alone another language.
However, despite glaring grammatical errors and giggleworthy pronunciation (just can't shake my natural accent ...) I know enough French and German to get by relatively easily, including the infamous "get out of jail" cards excusez-moi, parlez-vous Anglais? Je ne comprends pas très bien le français *sad face*/ Sprechen Sie Englisch? Ich verstehe nur ein bisschen Deutsch *sad face*.

I'm good enough at speaking Mandinka to haggle in the markets and to shock some locals into thinking that I understand what they're saying when they suddenly switch languages whilst discussing things. Couldn't write it to save my life though, and i'm pretty sure if I don't return soon i'll forget it all together XD

I do speak the smallest amount of Polish and Welsh, only enough to get by when absolutely necessary. Welsh because it was forced upon me one summer by some very zealous locals and Polish because very few of the people outside of the conference spoke English to a level it was possible to communicate with. Much better to have poor English and poor Polish so that each has a basic understanding of what is wanted than no Polish and poor English where nothing gets sorted out.

I can't switch languages, i'm not linguistically talented. I just speak a few very poorly and people laugh, point out the mistakes, but at least they understand. Plus it's not how you say it that matters, just that people understand what you're saying however comical it is to them.

I am so jealous of all the amazing languages you guys speak. You guys have crazy skills!

I however am not so gifted :p It may surprise you to learn that I can speak fluent English (most days). But that's pretty much where it ends.

I have a basic understanding of french but my accent is pretty atrocious. I can understand a little bit of German but speaking it is another story. In German I have two year old abilities as I'm able to: count, say the primary colours, say the basic greetings and (most importantly) say "Cheese" and "school" That's right, I'm all set.

Funny thing is that I know the advanced form (können instead of sprechen) that natives would likely use as slang for proclaiming ability in a language, and thus could end up looking more proficient than I really am.
