Shadow of the Colossus: They had done everything right. Original and fitting to the theme of gameplay, while versatile at the same time (notice the differences between piece such as Demise of Ritual, Violent Encounter and The Longest Journey). They should use portions of the composition for the upcoming movie, but I will have to execute the producers shall they allow a composer to craft heretical deviants from the original.

Though Homeworld should get an honorable mention too, if simply just for using the best Agnus Dei rendition of Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings. The Game of the Year edition in fact came with a soundtrack.

Brownie points though for anyone who can recall the composer of Lost Eden's soundtrack, let alone the game itself.

In game: Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Orchestrated Soundtrack: Probably Chrono Trigger

Runners up: Mega Man 2, Mega Man 3, Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy VII, Lunar: The Silver Star (Sega CD version is best, but the SS/PS versions are also good. Eternal Blue is great, but I like the original more), Afterburner II, Castlevania: Rondo of Blood (any Castlevania game, is good)

Everything about it is just awesome and I love the updated and expanded versions of the classic Mario themes.

I have to agree. I'm playing through it right now and the music is just incredible. I love the updated music and the original compositions. I'm seriously considering trying to get ahold of the soundtrack.

Total Annihilation
Epic Annihilation!

Jeremy Soule is one of the more prolific composers out there, though I can't say I enjoy most of his works as I did Total Annihilation (a flaw more attributed to the developer's integration though). Admittedly, the music in Total Annihilation actually felt like it was in place with the space opera overtones. I remember it more for being one of the best and most detailed soundtracks that any game had for a long time; even Frank's work on Command & Conquer was low sound quality until Red Alert 2.

Of course, we all know Total Annihilation was the revolutionary RTS that Starcraft really wan't, but that's a whole 'nother story.

I'm going to bump this thread and recommend the Ys soundtrack to everyone, if you haven't heard it before; specifically the stuff from Ys I & II. It EASILY rivals anything from Castlevania, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy. This game, BTW, was on CD back in 1989 (originally 1987, a year after Castlevania). Simply brilliant soundtrack.

I've got a few.

FFVII is the best.
The Nazi Zombie soundtrack on CoD5: MW is amazing.
Fallout 3, just because Three Daaaaaaaawg is funny the first 2/3 times.
CoD6: MW2 is pretty kewl.
Doubt many people would've played it, but the soundtrack to Chaos Gate was sweet.

Ugh, I'll post some of the music from Chaos Gate when I've made 50 posts. If you really can't wait, look up Ultramarine Chant on Youtube.

The Legacy of Kain series has good music, too.
