What is your understanding of day by day in this text?

it is having the mind of Christ (Philippians 2:5). The sanctified life, then, is the life so fully surrendered to fellowship with Christ day by day that inner spirit and outward expression are ruled by His spirit.

or in this one?

Praying God's Word Day by Day

or what does it mean to

Trust God day by day?

The translation I used uses “dynamic equivalence” or “idea by idea” method of translation.

Day by day, oh, dear Lord, three things I pray
To see thee more clearly
Love thee more dearly
Follow thee more nearly, day by day

Day by day, day by day

To see thee more clearly
Love thee more dearly
Follow thee more nearly, day by day

Do you realize the original Greek word used "kata" does not mean daily or day by day? Check it out for yourself...
I looked it up in Luke 11:3, two words makes up "day by day."

kata
Thayer Definition:
1) down from, through out
2) according to, toward, along

hēmera
Thayer Definition:
1) the day, used of the natural day, or the interval between sunrise and sunset, as distinguished from and contrasted with the night

Hēmera just means day... we see it in the Septuagint in placed like Genesis 1:5 (and the evening and the morning were the first hēmera. Kata is translated this way in our bibles: (the number after the bold English translation is how many times that English word was used or Kata....

I looked at the Greek too. I just can't find the words "day by day" in that text.
