"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." - Eleanor Roosevelt

I'm not talking about the "literal" sense.

Sounds to me like Eleanor Roosevelt is talking about vision and hope for a brighter future. Likely talking to younger people on one of her many speaking engagements; but certainly may have applied to others as well.

Also considering this: Is the dream really beautiful or is it only beautiful according to the subjectivity of the dreamer? Food for thought...

So what´s the non-literal sense of it?

I probably should have clarified more: I wasn't asking anyone to explain it to me, I was asking their personal response to it. As in, "What does this mean to YOU personally ? Do you believe it ? Disbelieve it ? Etc".

By literal sense, I mean, the future literally belonging to a certain group of people. So I wasn't addressing the literal sense of the quote, rather the overall gist.

I see.
That´s probably the great thing about statements using more or less figurative bits and pieces: I can interprete them in a way that makes me agree with them, and I can interprete them in a way that makes me disagree with them.

Well, I honestly can´t make much sense of "future belonging to...", neither in a literal nor non-literal sense.
Is it a good thing to have dreams/visions? Yes.
Is it a good thing to make sure your dreams/visions are beautiful? Sure, but the way the statement is made I am wondering: As opposed to making sure that they are what? What is the author assuming people feel will make future belong to them, so that he feels the need to emphasize "belief in the beauty of their dreams" as the crucial criterium?
Is having beautiful dreams (and particularly believing in their beauty) the warrant for gaining wealth, influence, power, authority in the future? I am not so sure about that.

"If you want your personal future (and that of the persons you interact with) to be beautiful, make sure your visions are circled around beauty."
That´s how I could possibly make positive sense of the statement. But then, this is almost trivial.

hmmmm......kinda' gets me to wonderin' if it means to keep hope alive, to keep dreamin' against all odds, and consequently to never ever "give up" on yer passion and/or dream....

reminds me of this:

always remain standing, even as all hell breaks loose around ya'....and ev'ry thing comes tumbling down....to stand, no matter what...

(ok, that 2nd part didn't make a lotta' sense....i was thinkin' out loud....but i'm gonna let it stand...)

I often wonder, a church service, for ever and ever...? I can barely handle 45 minutes.

No, its virgins and hurris for me, in sha Allah! If nothing else, Muhammed (saw) was a canny psychologist.

You know that 72 virgins might seem like a lot, but for eternity it's kind of infinitely little? That's a bad deal. I'd need infinite virgins for an infinite stretch of time. If I were into that sort of thing. :)

Yes yes. Similar to cold reading statements. You hear a vague statement that you both apply to yourself, and don't apply to yourself. Or it may sound like nonsense and word salad for that matter.

Also, similar to art.

I'm probably in agreement with most of those who have commented before. It doesn't mean anything in particular to me. Yes, it's nice to follow your dreams, but as a powerfully insightful observation, the line doesn't rank very high.
You know I actually almost qualified the thread with pointing out a bit of the "cheesiness" of the line, but I didn't want to seem jaded. It is a little bit like, "Somewhere over the rainbow, dreams really do come true." I mean, it's not groundbreaking insight necessarily. However it's one of those lines that has stuck with me through the years, cheesy or not (my words lol), and I was reminded of it recently.

Recently I had an opportunity to sell out, to put it bluntly ... it wasn't one of those "obvious" sell out type situations. You know, it was one of those that have all the hallmarks of an awesome chance, an awesome opportunity ... but there is some nagging thing that is just not sitting well. One thing lacking, per se. That one thing, I realized, would have caused me to possibly compromise something that is on par with dream level with my life. And so I passed up the opportunity. After doing so, I had the phrase in the OP come to mind a bit later, reminding me of when I first heard it (I think in high school maybe). Anyways, it came to mind ... for me at least ... in the context of the opposite of selling out one's dreams. So I was curious if anyone had any of their own responses to it. I didn't expect it to illicit a long drawn out discussion necessarily, or one that was particularly deep ... but you never know :)

;) Yes, around here almost any comment will lead to a long drawn out thread leading who knows where. Then someone will resurrect it a year after it's finally seemed to have died. So if you throw us a very broad invitation like "what are your thoughts?" it's almost guaranteed! :D

I'm not talking about the "literal" sense.

A pretty meaningless statement to the average person. OTOH I've passed up fortunes (two to be exact) so that I can spend more time in the woods bowhunting. :D

I don't find this "cheesy" at all.

It reminds me of this:

"Keep on keepin' on"

It means persistence is a "good" thing and it is a way of expressing encouragement to someone who maybe cannot go on, but "must" for whatever reason. In addition, there is a stark shortage of any kind of encouragement in this world.

In light of that, is any encouragement "cheesy"?

Seriously?

Thank you kindly.
