• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What is your philosophy of life?

We are faced with a world-of-value. Self, others, animals and objects included. Positives, negatives and neutrals. Some are plastic and open to voluntary change, and others are more fixed. Things (life itself, objects, actions, consequences) matter because thay have value to us. We must respond, manage ourselves in relation to this, and face the consequences. Thus it is wise to seek the positive, and fashion the positive in a way that is wise. That is our inescapable, unavoidable and often intimately personal existential predicament. Evolution is to blame, and perhaps God too. The End.

If you had your 1 minute of fame, on the TV for example, what would your message be?

With all due respect to believers, one does not have to believe in the existence of deities to have meaning and purpose in life. We are products of evolution, but no matter our origins, our lives are worthwhile in themselves. Our lives do not have value merely as a means to some afterlife, so do not fear that death will take away that meaning. The past may leave, but will always have happened, so one's life is like a diamond that shines in eternity. Take hold of that thought, chisel that diamond to what beauty you can, and shine!

We also have our own personal fire of creation -- our talents and the drive to use them -- and our great task in life is to use that fire to create values. Such values can be great or modest, and can have to do with any life-affirming activity, such as art, science, business, philosophy, engineering, and entertainment. There is great meaning to be found here.

In brief: Love your life, discover your talents, improve your character, strive to self-actualize, and reap the rewards of earned self-esteem.

Anything about reality that is significant to you is the product of your own interpretation.
Quotona I am in the habit of disagreeing with you for some reason or other. However I think thats a great thought, if you give it a chance. At least a lot of what I value, for instance faith or love, is intimately related to ones interpretations beacuse they are grounded in ones perception.

There are two kinds of people: those who say to God, "Thy will be done," and those to whom God says, "All right, then, have it your way."
I am in the latter group because I know the Guy personally. I think that formalistic reverence might be appropriayte for example int a liturgy, but if you want a personal relationship with God remember that we are not robots.

That quote Neitzschean and existential, withsome positive humanistic psychology for good measure. Does that sound fair?

hmm, intriguing question.

I think i would say something with the theme 'Be humble', humble as in admitting there are things we don't know for sure. And to realize that most people believe what they are raised to believe..and to ask yourself if you fall in that majority. And to be constructive to society regardless of beliefs.

Read and study Ecclesiastes. Understand that all is vanity and the only way to have true meaning in life is with God as the focus.

I'm not an existentialist per se, but I am dealing with the modern crisis of meaning, so in that sense I am part of their program.

Eudaimonism is a big part of my message (the idea that life is worthwhile in itself), so that influence shouldn't be ignored. Of course, positive psychology is influenced by eudaimonism.

And, of course, Ayn Rand is an influence, but I consider her a slightly Nietzsche-influenced eudaimonist. Her influence has to do with seeing nobility and meaning in constructive activities.

Pythagoras' theorem then?

The point of my snippet was not to give an answer, but to prompt a response ... to hope the conversation would last more than 1 minute.

So, I guess I succeeded.

As far as the Pythagoreans were concerned, they seem to have been pantheists. IMO pantheists take one of 2 roads. They try either to appease or control nature - a task that is bound to fail. So, it seems to be more a state of living in fear of nature than living for something.

I believe a person should follow their true callings. One should also be able to accept others as unique, and special, with their own ideas, ideals, and views. More than anything, one should Love.
