So tonight not that long ago I decided to look up my name in Hebrew which in English my name is Alison, I was wondering what my name would be and what it would mean in Hebrew, mainly because I was feeling bored and I was just curious to know. So I decided to do some research on Google and my name in Hebrew is Yisraela dervived from the name Israela which apparently means to "Wrestle With God" . I also discovered that my Hebrew name is the female version of the name that God gave to Jacob which is Yisrael or Israel which means to "Strive With God" . In The Bible it says that Jacob wrestled with God which he did not realise in the beginning because Jacob demanded a blessing, in the end the Lord dislocated Jacobs hip and then Jacob says "I will not let you go until you give me a blessing." which his response pleased the Lord. Which is when God gave Jacob the name Yisrael (Israel). The term Wrestle With God doesn't literally mean to fight with him but to seek him in prayer and ask for blessings. What I have learned from this is that not only what my name is in Hebrew & what it means but as a Child of God to Wrestle With God is not actually to fight with him but to seek him with our hearts through prayer, don't be afraid to Wrestle With God because that's what he wants from you, he wants you to wrestle with him because he loves you and wants to give you what your heart desires. God wants us to fight for our blessings because in his eyes we are worth it. May God have mercy on all of you, give you peace and fill your hearts with love & joy. God bless ☺️

I've got no idea what that even means -- it sounds like nonsense. The name "Alison" is actually derived (via "Alis," "Alaïs," and "Adelais") from the Germanic name "Adelaide," which means "noble." There is no connection to "Israela" at all.

If you read the whole post you would know that the name Yisraela means "Wrestle With God." And what makes you believe that what I am posting is nonsense? The name Israel is in The Bible how could this not be true?

I know what the name "Israel" means, and yes it's in the Bible. But I'm questioning the idea that "Yisraela" is your "Hebrew name."

If you want a Hebrew name with the same meaning as your own, that would probably be "Sarah," which means "noblewoman."

Ahhh ok, I get you. I know that in The Bible that it says that her name was Sarai before God gave her the name Sarah. Do they both mean the same thing?

Funnily enough, my name, Alexander, is the other side of the coin, namely Greek: Ἀλέξανδρος. It means 'Defender of the people', I believe.

It's derived from the verb alexо̄ (to defend/protect) and andros (the genitive of "man," as distinct from "woman"). Really, it means "good at fighting battles." Alexander the Great was the most famous bearer of the name, and the name has travelled as far east as Asia (in the form "Sikandar" or "Iskandar").

I'm not quite sure what "Sarai" means. It must mean something different, or the name change would be pointless.

Not sure what site y'all are using to find it. But using My Hebrew Name, I'm getting a list of names for Charlie (male). First on the list is Chizki, but לחזוק – to be strong; to become stronger, to strengthen (archaic) – Hebrew conjugation tables says it's means strong for woman while it's Chazak for man.
That's the website I found the Hebrew name Yisraela for Alison, but is that site reliable or not? Because my Hebrew name is apparently Sarah according to what radagast said.

When I run "Alison" through that website, it gives me 6 completely different names, of which "Sara" is actually one. I would definitely question the website's reliability.

Yeah that makes sense, even though they both look and sound the same except the last letter is different. But you're probably right.

I don't know if it's reliable. I know nothing about Hebrew, but supposedly the site gives multiple names with similar meanings.

Note: English names which are not derived from
Hebrew names are normally represented by Hebrew
names with similar underlying meanings.

Some people suggest that "Sarai" means "noblewoman," and that "Sarah" is even better, meaning "princess."

Others suggest that "Sarah" can mean both "noblewoman" and "princess," but that "Sarai" means "quarrelsome."

Either way, "Sarah" is the better name.

Quite frankly, it looks like a scam. They're selling glossy certificates with Hebrew writing on them. There doesn't seem to be much Hebrew scholarship sitting behind it.

Yeah I saw that, that does seem a bit strange. How many of those names under Alison on that website are actually in The Bible though? I know that Sarah and Israel are, i'm not sure about the others though.
