If there is one thing I've learnt over the years, it is not to make any comments whatsoever on abstract modern art. I don't mind if I can see what it is supposed to be, like a Picasso or something, but my innocent ignorance of abstract art tends to rub some up the wrong way, and even send them into some sort of rage. I'm not sure why they get so protective over it, if someone criticises something I love, like football/soccer (which is an art in itself), I just shrug my shoulders then make some crude joke about their... erm.. taste. A little more patience, please, I'm trying to understand.

A true story here, there used to be a long running topical programme in the UK called That's Life when I was a kid, and in one segment they found an elephant that could hold a paint brush with its trunk and paint on a palette. The results weren't too unlike the picture above (remember though, I'm no art expert). Anyway, they showed its work to several art critics. To be fair most of them said it was crap, but 2 or 3 of them were raving about it, and giving all sorts crazy interpretations. When they revealed the artist it left them very red faced to say the least. Quite amusing I'm sure you'll agree.

Anyway, I can be as pretentious as the best of them, so I wouldn't be averse to putting something like that up on my wall to give me some sort of artistic credibility, I just don't think I appreciate that sort of art in the same way others do.

And then there's this cathedral in the Czech Republic. Personally, I think it's sort of interesting, but I don't know if I would call it "pleasant"

I find that cathedral highly aesthetically pleasing. It would have been nice if the individuals whose bones were used were asked for permission, but other than that I find it highly creative and beautiful.

The problem with modern culture is that it is not modern but pagan barbarianism with a technological twist that suggests slickness to the untrained mind.

Go on? I'd love to hear the rational behind this assertion.

People have been complaining about the decline of their current cultures for millennia, looking nostalgically back at older days (and ignoring the flaws of those older times in the process).

"A tablet from ancient Assyria, about 2800 B.C., has been found that states: 'Our earth is degenerate in these latter days. There are signs that the world is speedily coming to an end. Bribery and corruption are common.' More than 2,000 years later, Socrates complained, 'Children are now tyrants...They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize over their teachers.' And Plato wrote of his students: 'What is happening to our young people? They disrespect their elders, they disobey their parents, they ignore the law. They riot in the streets inflamed with wild notions. Their morals are decaying. What is to become of them?'"

-- Isaac Asimov's Book of Facts, ed. Isaac Asimov. New York: Wings Books, 1979.

There is one from Hitler that is pretty much the same as the one you cite by Plato. The most significant difference is Hitler has a line about spending time in Beer Halls. Otherwise the same.

Perhaps what is wrong with the present is that we view it with open eyes and with glasses that bring it all, including the warts and pimples into focus, while the past is viewed through rose colored glasses. Also our fears about the future are real and uunresolved, the fears of past times may be viewed by us as real, but at the least they are resolved. Hitler was defeated, the Cuban missle crissis did not end in a perhaps final war... but we do not know how global warming or conflict in the Middle East will end.

Anyone remember the one episode of Happy Days where there was a black drummer in Rich Cunninghams band? Even that was really sugar coated, but think back on the real 50s and realize they were not that nice.

I'll leave it to the experts to interpret, but I like to think the red symbolises my love, my heart, my passion.. the blue part represents the coldness in this harsh world of ours. I don't want to give it all away, so I'll leave it for you to decipher what the yellow bit means.

This is retarded. What your argument amounts to is like you coming into my home and saying, "What is wrong with people today!? Your furniture is horrible! My furniture is gorgeous compared to this! Mine's christian inspired too."

>.>

People have different tastes, and thank goodness! I'd hate to have a world full of "me's" running around - how boring! Get a life, get over yourself, and realise that everyone is not the same.

Different =/= wrong.

EDIT: I happen to like abstract art such as in the second photo (the first doesn't load). My home is full of that style. Second, I had a weird hairdo when I was in a rockband as well. Big deal. Beats the hell outta a buncha old, white republican men with salt and pepper hair parted on the side wearing outdated tweed suits. Ick.

No, no, no. Well Ok on the outdated suits, unless of course they fit and are actually comfortable. But salt and perrer hair is fine as long as it is natural.

For hairstyle let's go with balding men with comb overs or bad toupes!

And this does point to an ill of modern culture, vanity!

This being a Christian board I'll reference Ecclesticies (sp). There are two themes are repeated over and over. Vanity of vanities, all is vanity. There is nothing new under the sun.

And here Scripture is right. So many of todays ills are because of vanity, and that problem was old when the OT was written.

Oops see I was mainly responding to your edit. Agree with the initial post. All the same is very boring and a pretty good image of Hell (despite the fact many seem to paint Heaven that way).

A tour-de-force. It brilliantly juxtaposes the technocratic primitive with post-post-modern aesthetics.

I will somewhat agree with the OP at least in saying that lost of modern art is completely horrible when compared to the stuff that we have throughout history. My friend's theory is that this is due to the crappier pieces of art slowly being forgotten and not preserved so we're essentially left with the cream of the crop to compare with all of the modern art.

To the former: nothing

To the latter: atheists only make up a small portion of the population. By your arguments wouldn't that make anything that's wrong with the modern culture the fault of the theists?

Ok, I'll grant you that and retract my statement. I have to admit, natural salt and pepper hair is quite sexy on certain individuals..
