Yes, but for other people.
...to fill labor demand.
The problem, IMO, is not too many people. Rather, our workforce skills are not aligned with the needs of our employers.
Indeed -- our employers need hordes of people willing to do menial unskilled labor for an hourly pittance, but our current standard of living is such that you're not going to find nearly enough people willing/able to do that kind of work for the low wages required for the bosses to how a desired profit.
Along come the immigrants... problem solved.
......that's been the pattern since our country was founded. Immigrants simply have greater incentive too work hard and understand the value of our low wages. And as the decades passed, each new wave of immigrants were vilified....
Over the last 3 decades, U.S. employers (of all sizes including the current occupant in the WH), have exploited illegal labor. Remove the illegal hiring practices and illegal immigration solves it self.

The idea of America being full is absolutely laughable. You have vast amounts of space with hardly anyone living there. All it actually means is some people think they should be allowed to have large tracts of empty land just for themselves and their family. It has absolutely nothing to do with any actual shortage of anything.
But the needs of our employers is use technology to compete with cheap labor overseas and to reduce labor costs here. This is a downward spiral for our workers, skilled and unskilled.
Right -- but politicians need more than an enemy; they need an enemy with a face.
Automation is a difficult target for the Two Minutes' Hate -- immigrants are easy.
We need vast tracts of 'empty' land for food production, and recreation.
We can't afford either, immigrant labor or 'labor saving' technology, in the sociological sense.
That's two "problems" that need solving: one difficult, the other impossible.
You could adopt a strict isolationist strategy and bar immigration entirely... it's been tried, even when successful, it never ended well.
As for barring technology, well -- good luck with that. Stopping that kind of progress is like trying to beat back the ocean with a mop.
Recreation? That’s funny. Many other countries get by just fine with far higher population densities. Just because you like having vast open spaces to go play in, doesn’t mean you need them.
Jes' sayin'.
sayin' is easy -- but it's thinkin' and doin' that gets results.
The only authority I have is over my own life. I can make suggestions however.
Then go ahead -- make a suggestion. (saying "it's x's fault" is assigning blame, not making a suggestion)
Both blame and solution are implicit.
The US is one of the LEAST densely populated countries in the world. European countries are 5-10 times as densely populated. We need vast tracts of 'empty' land for food production, recreation, and just to escape from the masses and the cities.
Blame is explicit; try harder on the solution.
Sure, we could build the wall -- and then the companies that rely on cheap labor will simply abuse the numerous loopholes in out immigration system to get the labor they need.
And automation? I've yet to hear you or anyone else posit a way to stop people from thinking and inventing.
