  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What is Christian worship?
It can not be defined. Worship just is surrendering ourselves to God. It could be with music, in prayer or in contemplation.

I agree music especially singing, prayer, and contemplative communion with God can be worship.

Amen to that. What is your definition of worship? Or should we wait for more responses from forum members before you give your response?

What is Christian worship?
Worship = worth - ship. We give God his worth.
Expressions of worship may include music, prayer, silence, dance, singing in tongues, chanting etc. etc.

Scripture says that offering ourselves to God as a living sacrifice, is true worship, Romans 12:1.
It says that whatever we do we should do in the name of Jesus, as working for the Lord and not for men and with gratitude in our hearts, Colossians 3:17. It says that God's will for us is that we believe in Jesus, John 6:40 and that we rejoice always, pray at all times and also give thanks in all circumstances, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18.

How we live our lives for God is worship.

What is Christian worship?

It is a connection.

A drawing of ourselves to The Almighty, to the being of eternity. A cleansing and strengthening of ourselves with His holiness.

To me worship is...taking time out to "be still and know I am God"...praise...glorification...participating in the Eucharist as commanded to "do this in remembrance of me"...coming to God in prayer...publicly proclaiming our belief as in recitation of the Creed...proclaiming and acknowledging the God and Father of us all. It is a continuation of the same spirit as those who laid palm branches on the road before Christ's triumphal entrance into Jerusalem in celebration of the King of Kings.

How can a creature give God his worth?
We're not going to be able to worship him perfectly; we are human and he is so much greater than we can ever imagine.
But we can tell him - and show him by our lives - what he means to us. We can give thanks at all times; being thankful to him and not taking his blessings for granted.

Someone who has a view of God as being very strict, punishing people with suffering and so on, will almost certainly not be able to worship.

Why did you say one of God's commandments?
"A command" would work. A general definition of "righteous worship", seems to be, "offering up to God obedience to His commands". If you wash the dishes (serving others) out of your Love for God and not some carnal purpose, you could offer that obedience to him as worship, since it is His command.
When do you see Jesus not in worship to God?

What is Christian worship?
The way to worship/bring glory to God is by testifying about His character traits by being doers of them in obedience to the Mosaic Law. For example, by being doers of good works in obedience to the Mosaic Law, we are testifying about God's goodness, which is why our good works bring glory to Him (Matthew 5:16), and by testifying about God's goodness, we are also expressing the belief that He is good, or in other words, we are believing in Him, and the same is true for God's other character traits.

An interesting view.

@Clare73, is worship a verb about what a Christian does in front of God?

Christian worship essentially means keeping our mind on God.

As someone who doesn't always like God (for personal reasons which no doubt sound ridiculous in the divine court) I sometimes wonder about this question myself.

Is God so narcissistic that He needs our praise?

The answer is "No". God doesn't need anything - He's the one and only Being who is entirely self sufficient. We depend on Him.

He doesn't need us or our praise. But He wants our mind on Him, not for His sake but for ours. Atheists might think that God is insecure and demands worship, but that's because their "God" who allegedly doesn't exist is nothing more than a philosophical construct, an idea. Who is going to worship something that turns out to be an intellectual puff of smoke?

Christ said "No man can serve two masters." Worship then is a means of keeping our mind on Our Master, the One to whom we will all give an account of our lives. We will serve Him or we will serve something else. In the end we will find out there is nothing else. The sum zero energy universe gives us a hint of that.

Along a similar line it seems some Catholics might go to a megachurch and be impressed with the emotional and powerful music, and fall away from their own faith. Now for one thing if God needs music He won't ask us for it - He'll have His own band, mixer and headphones if I'm going to be facetious.

The question is one of Truth. How does God want to be worshipped? It's encapsuated in Christ's words "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life ....No man goes to the Father but through Me" and "If you do not eat my flesh and drink my blood, you have no part in me".

Communion is central, and all the other things - homily, music, creeds, prayers, Bible readings - are mere accessories.

What is Christian worship?
Doing what God created you to do, and obeying God.
I think that also encompasses surrendering to God, God created you and defines your purpose rather than you defining your own purpose.

I come to this conclusion because of how things were created in Genesis 1 and 2. God created things as He desired them to be, and gave commands. As creation obeyed God, it could be said that they were in perfect worship of God despite not having the trappings of any religious "worship" Adam and Eve were not falling on their faces singing hymns and performing sacraments and sacrifices... all those things came after the fall.

Does a fish worship God? Does a lizard worship God? Do bacteria?
and I would say..... yes.
But they don't pray, they don't sing, they don't bow before God and make obsequious submission gestures...
But God designed them to swim, creepeth upon the earth, and be fruitful and multiply, and they do that... so they obey God, and thus, worship Him by doing what He created them to do.
God defined our purpose in Genesis 1 and 2, why He created us. To fill the Earth, and subdue it and have dominion over it, in Genesis 2 it was to till the ground, to dress the garden and to keep it. In other words, man is created to cultivate the world in a means like God would desire it, to make it thrive.
Sin altered that and now we cultivate the world in a means that we think it should go. So we are not living our pupose, and so we are not worshiping God. We are ruling unjustly.
However our destiny is still to rule.

Revelation 2
26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:
27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.

Revelation 3

The promise is to rule. Because that is what we were created to do, in the image of God. God is a ruler.
and so if we rule in a way that pleases God.. we are worshiping Him.

I get depressed and wish I'd never been created when I think of most people's ideas that we were all created just to stroke God's ego for all eternity telling Him how great He is for some.. attention starved all powerful narcissist.

Then I go to the bible and see what God defines our purpose as and feel much more encouraged.

Amen that the Bible has changed your opinion of God for the better. God sent His Son to die for us, so that shows that God is benevolent and gave up Himself for us.
