My own minister has preached on tithing citing the one-tenth rule, I personally find that misses the point of giving and would prefer if we just emphasised the sacrificial element of giving a lá CS Lewis - 'give until it hurts'.

I know of a local Reformed church that requires tithes. On the other hand that same church doesn't allow it's members to go on public assistance. They share the burden.

The local Orthodox church requires people to pay a membership fee.
