  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What is the point?

As an ex-Athiest, I wonder if I might reply. Life for the sake of life. Life and its experiences. You dont need to believe in a god to enjoy life.

I must say Im a little perturbed at the rather....scathing atitude towards Athiests your post conveys

Sorry, I did not mean to have any scathing attitude towards atheists. So I fixxed my post.

I keep living because in my opinion, death sounds so much more boring. Why care if I live or die? Because I still have certain things I want to accomplish/experience before I go. On the other hand, death might not be so bad. I'm simply returning to the universe I came out of.

The amount of time we have after death, which I figure to be somewhere near infinity is a rather long time in comparison to the 72 (give or take) years that we have in this life. I don't see any need to rush it, especially when there are so many things, people, events and emotions, that one can experience here on Earth. I guess a lot of it has to do with being a part of society, for me.. as long as I'm here there's always something I CAN contribute in some way or another (good, bad or otherwise)

As for me personally, having a son is the most important reason I could ever need.. but even before I was a father, suicide seemed such a foolish move. Then again, I never give up. If always figure, no matter how bad things may seem, there's always some combination that can get me out of it in some way. And besides, life is worth living, just cuz.

Why do you bother living on?

Because I'm not being tortured in a concentration camp. Only in that sort of circumstance would I even consider suicide. I'm a very non-suicidal person, and was non-suicidal even when I was a teenager.

Generally speaking, I see my life as worthwhile. My brief time alive is precious. My life is sacred to me.

Why should(or do) you care if you dead or alive?

My life is my very existence. It matters to me in a fundamental way. Why wouldn't I care about the issue?

Why should(or do) you care if you are happy, or sad?

I have to live with that happiness or sadness, don't I? Also, I care for the same reason I care if I take vitamins or not -- because I want what's good for me. Why? Because what is good nourishes my life. Why care about that? See above.

Why enjoy life?

Because life can be enjoyable. Why enjoy chocolate? Why enjoy a personal achievement? Why enjoy the smile of a loved one? Because these are enjoyable.

Just wondering what your replys might be.

Thanks
Because life is all I have. We only get one chance at life and I may as well make the best of it.

Do you remember what it was like before you were born? I don't know about you, but things were pretty boring for me back before I was alive, so I tend to view life like it's a vacation from death, and I want to enjoy my vacation as much as possible because I don't think I'll ever get another one.

Now here is a another question, why do we have these feelings?

Why do we have the desire to live, and enjoy life(Like the reasons you posted)?

Everyone seems to have these desires to live, and enjoy life.
Otherwise, you would probably would not care if you where in a consentration camp, being starved, and tortured.

It's somewhat odd, but in a way, I don't care all that much. My sense of self-preservation seems to be lower than the average. I'd have no problem throwing myself in front of a bullet to save someone else, for example.

Why should(or do) you care if you are happy, or sad?

Why do I not shove my hand into open flames?

Why enjoy life?

Why not?

The human species would have gone extinct long ago if we were naturally ambivalent about survival. One can expect that individuals with a strong natural desire to survive would pass on those genes to future generations.

Let me guess, next you're going to tell us that happiness is a gift from the invisible man in the sky, and since people are happy, that proves there's an invisible man in the sky. Hmm... if the ancient Greeks enjoyed life, does that prove that Zeus, Poseidon, and Hera exist? If the ancient Aztecs enjoyed life, does that prove that Ometeotl and Quetzalcoatl exist? Since there are so many happy Hindus, does that prove that reincarnation is true? Reincarnation sounds great, I would love to have a few more vacations from death. Maybe I should convert. Does believing that reincarnation is true actually make it true? Does believing there's an invisible man in the sky make it true?
