  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What is the most effective way to protect us from ISIS?

When you remove an individuals self-worth through meaningful work and create a state of hopelessness among large segments of the population, there are bound to be consequences.

ISIS attracts disillusioned youth who have no job prospects and no hope for the future.

ISIS gives them a purpose and validates their worth - albeit to a cause that most people, including Moslems, reject.

Donald Trump can promise the American public a quick fix, but if he was 40 years younger with no job and no prospects for the future, he would join ISIS in a heat-beat.

Have I not already posted this? This is an article written by a man who is a consultant to the Department of Homeland Security. He's speaking to Americans for whom jihadi radicalization is so far removed from their own life experiences that they can't even imagine how it can happen. But that American generation is also one that has seen Star Wars, so he uses Luke Skywalker's tale as an analogy...which turns out to be quite accurate.

The Radicalization of Luke Skywalker: A Jedi's Path to Jihad

A more focused study, however, is needed to truly understand that the Star Wars films are actually the story of the radicalization of Luke Skywalker. From introducing him to us in A New Hope (as a simple farm boy gazing into the Tatooine sunset), to his eventual transformation into the radicalized insurgent of Return of the Jedi (as one who sets his own father’s corpse on fire and celebrates the successful bombing of the Death Star), each film in the original trilogy is another step in Luke’s descent into terrorism. By carefully looking for the same signs governments and scholars use to detect radicalization, we can witness Luke’s dark journey into religious fundamentalism and extremism happen before our very eyes.

Now, don't get bogged down in geeky details about the Star Wars canon. What is important is to note the characteristics of the boy's environment and roots and how men guide him toward a particular path.
